Core Responsibilities
Primary Functions
- Perform end-to-end installation of fiber optic cables in both Outside Plant (OSP) and Inside Plant (ISP) environments, including underground, aerial, and in-building pathways.
- Execute precise fusion and mechanical splicing of single-mode and multi-mode fiber optic cables, ensuring minimal signal loss and adherence to industry best practices.
- Conduct comprehensive testing and certification of new and existing fiber optic networks using advanced equipment like OTDRs, Power Meters, and Visual Fault Locators (VFLs).
- Interpret and analyze OTDR trace results to identify, troubleshoot, and resolve fiber optic impairments, breaks, and performance issues with a high degree of accuracy.
- Read, interpret, and update construction blueprints, network design maps, and splicing schematics to ensure accurate installation and documentation.
- Install, terminate, and test various types of fiber optic connectors (LC, SC, ST) and associated hardware, including patch panels, termination boxes, and splice closures.
- Perform site surveys to assess installation requirements, identify potential obstacles, and contribute to the planning and design of fiber optic cable routes.
- Operate specialized equipment such as bucket trucks, aerial lifts, and trenching machinery safely and efficiently for OSP installations.
- Document all installation, testing, and repair activities meticulously, including splice details, test results, and as-built drawings for network records.
- Coordinate with project managers, network engineers, and construction crews to ensure project timelines, budgets, and quality standards are consistently met.
- Perform network activation and turn-up procedures, integrating new fiber infrastructure with existing network equipment and systems.
- Conduct emergency restoration and maintenance on damaged fiber optic cables to minimize network downtime and restore service promptly.
- Ensure strict adherence to all safety protocols, including OSHA regulations, traffic control procedures, and company-specific safety policies, to maintain a safe work environment.
- Manage and maintain all assigned tools, test equipment, and company vehicles, ensuring they are in proper working condition and calibrated as required.
- Provide exceptional customer service by communicating effectively with clients during on-site installations, explaining procedures, and ensuring their requirements are met.
- Install and secure conduits, innerducts, and other cable pathways in various environments to protect fiber optic infrastructure.
- Perform quality assurance checks on work performed by internal teams and third-party contractors to guarantee compliance with technical specifications.
- Prepare detailed daily and weekly progress reports, outlining tasks completed, materials used, and any issues encountered during the project.
- Participate in pre-construction meetings to provide technical insights on constructability, materials, and installation methods.
- Mount and configure network hardware in telecommunication closets, data centers, and customer premises, including racks, cabinets, and enclosures.
- Troubleshoot and resolve complex service issues from the central office or headend to the customer premise, isolating faults within the physical layer.
- Train and mentor junior technicians and installers on proper installation techniques, safety procedures, and the use of test equipment.
