Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Direct, supervise, and mentor a field crew of 2-10+ members, providing clear instructions and ongoing guidance to ensure successful project completion.
  • Plan, coordinate, and delegate daily and weekly work assignments to maximize crew productivity and ensure project milestones are met on schedule.
  • Serve as the primary on-site point of contact for project managers, clients, and subcontractors, facilitating clear communication and providing regular, detailed progress updates.
  • Conduct daily job site safety briefings (tailgate or toolbox talks) to review potential hazards, discuss safety protocols, and foster a proactive safety-first culture.
  • Enforce all company and OSHA safety regulations on the job site, promptly identifying and correcting any unsafe acts or conditions to prevent accidents and injuries.
  • Interpret and execute work based on blueprints, construction drawings, project specifications, and survey staking to ensure accuracy and compliance.
  • Manage on-site logistics, including the coordination and scheduling of materials, equipment, and personnel to ensure a smooth workflow and avoid delays.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve complex operational, technical, or personnel issues that arise in the field, implementing effective solutions to keep the project on track.
  • Complete and submit accurate daily field reports, including labor hours, equipment usage, work progress logs, material consumption, and incident reports.
  • Oversee the proper operation, handling, and daily maintenance of heavy machinery, company vehicles, and specialized tools, ensuring they are used safely and effectively.
  • Perform continuous quality control inspections throughout the project lifecycle to ensure all work meets or exceeds company and client quality standards.
  • Proactively identify potential project risks, challenges, or scope changes and communicate them to the Project Manager in a timely manner.
  • Train and develop crew members, providing hands-on instruction and constructive feedback to enhance their skills and foster professional growth within the company.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and secure job site at all times, ensuring tools, equipment, and materials are properly stored.
  • Read and understand utility locates (e.g., 811 One-Call) to prevent damage to underground infrastructure during excavation and other site work.
  • Monitor and track daily costs related to labor, equipment, and materials to ensure the project remains within its allocated budget.
  • Facilitate a positive and collaborative team environment, motivating crew members and resolving interpersonal conflicts professionally and effectively.
  • Assess site conditions prior to work commencement to identify and plan for potential challenges related to terrain, access, or environmental factors.
  • Manage the inventory of on-site tools, equipment, and consumable materials, coordinating with the warehouse or procurement for timely replenishment.
  • Represent the company in a professional and courteous manner during all interactions with clients, the public, and regulatory agency representatives.

Secondary Functions

  • Assist Project Managers in the pre-planning and estimating phases by providing field-level insights and constructability reviews.
  • Perform minor repairs and preventative maintenance on tools and equipment to minimize downtime and ensure operational readiness.
  • Provide documentation and photos for change orders or unforeseen conditions encountered on the job site.
  • Participate in post-project review meetings to provide feedback and contribute to lessons learned for future projects.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Blueprint & Plan Reading: Ability to read, interpret, and execute work from construction drawings, schematics, and project specifications.
  • Equipment Operation: Proficiency in operating and overseeing the use of relevant industry equipment (e.g., excavators, loaders, trenchers, survey tools).
  • Safety Regulation Compliance: In-depth knowledge of OSHA standards (OSHA 10/30 certification highly preferred) and job site safety protocols.
  • Project Management Software: Experience using field management software (e.g., Procore, HCSS, Fieldwire) for daily reporting and time tracking.
  • First Aid/CPR: Certification in First Aid and CPR is strongly preferred.
  • Material & Cost Management: Ability to track labor hours and material usage to maintain project budget awareness.
  • Quality Control: Keen eye for detail and the ability to perform inspections to ensure work meets high-quality standards.
  • Commercial Driver's License (CDL): A valid CDL (Class A or B) is often required or highly advantageous.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent.

Preferred Education:

  • Associate's Degree or completion of a vocational/trade school program.

Relevant Fields of Study:

  • Construction Management
  • Environmental Science
  • Skilled Trades (Carpentry, Electrical, etc.)

Experience Requirements

Typical Experience Range: 3-5+ years of progressive experience in the relevant industry (e.g., construction, landscaping, environmental services), with at least 1-2 years in a lead or supervisory capacity.

Preferred:

  • Demonstrated experience leading crews on projects of similar size and scope.
  • A proven track record of completing projects safely, on time, and within budget.
  • Verifiable experience in training junior team members and promoting a culture of safety and quality.
