Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Conduct comprehensive on-site inspections of construction projects, properties, or infrastructure to assess conditions and verify compliance with project blueprints, schematics, and specifications.
  • Meticulously document all inspection findings, including taking high-resolution photographs, videos, and detailed notes to create a clear and indisputable record of site conditions.
  • Prepare and submit detailed, accurate, and timely inspection reports using proprietary software and standard templates, clearly outlining observations, non-conformance issues, and required corrective actions.
  • Evaluate workmanship, materials, and installations to ensure they meet or exceed contractual agreements, industry best practices, and established quality standards.
  • Proactively identify and report potential safety hazards, code violations, and structural defects to project managers and safety personnel to prevent accidents and ensure a safe working environment.
  • Interpret and apply local, state, and federal building codes (e.g., IBC, IRC, NEC), zoning ordinances, and other applicable regulations during all phases of inspection.
  • Communicate effectively with a diverse range of stakeholders, including clients, contractors, project managers, and regulatory officials, to discuss findings and resolve issues collaboratively.
  • Verify that appropriate corrective actions have been implemented to address previously identified deficiencies and document the resolution in follow-up reports.
  • Manage a dynamic schedule of multiple inspections across a designated geographical area, optimizing travel routes for efficiency and punctuality.
  • Perform materials testing and sampling on-site or coordinate with third-party laboratories to verify the quality and integrity of materials like concrete, soil, and steel.
  • Witness and document functional tests of building systems, such as HVAC, plumbing, and electrical, to ensure they operate as designed.
  • Maintain a professional and objective demeanor during potentially contentious situations, providing clear, fact-based evidence to support inspection conclusions.
  • Utilize various inspection tools and measuring devices, such as moisture meters, laser levels, and calipers, to obtain precise data and measurements.
  • Review and interpret project documentation, including submittals, change orders, and requests for information (RFIs), to ensure alignment with field conditions.
  • Assess property damage for insurance claims, determining the scope of the loss, cause, and origin, and providing detailed estimates for repair.
  • Monitor and document the progress of construction activities against the project schedule, reporting any significant delays or deviations.
  • Conduct pre-pour and post-pour concrete inspections, ensuring correct formwork, rebar placement, and proper curing procedures are followed.
  • Perform final "punch list" inspections to identify any outstanding items that need to be addressed before project completion and client handover.
  • Stay current with evolving industry standards, new construction technologies, materials, and changes in building codes through continuous education and professional development.
  • Operate a company vehicle in a safe and responsible manner while navigating to and from various job sites.

Secondary Functions

  • Assist in the development and refinement of internal inspection procedures, checklists, and reporting standards to improve quality and efficiency.
  • Provide mentorship and on-the-job training to junior inspectors or new team members.
  • Maintain all company-issued inspection equipment, ensuring it is calibrated, clean, and in good working order.
  • Participate in project pre-construction meetings to provide insight on potential inspection challenges and quality control measures.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Building Code Knowledge: Deep understanding of local, state, and national building codes (ICC, NEC, UPC, etc.).
  • Blueprint & Schematic Reading: Ability to expertly read and interpret complex construction drawings, plans, and technical specifications.
  • Inspection Software Proficiency: Experience using digital reporting software such as Procore, Fieldwire, Plangrid, or similar platforms.
  • Material & Systems Knowledge: Strong knowledge of construction materials, methods, and building systems (structural, mechanical, electrical, plumbing).
  • Technical Reporting: Skill in writing clear, concise, and technically accurate inspection reports that are legally defensible.
  • Damage Assessment: Ability to accurately assess the scope and cause of property damage for insurance or warranty purposes.
  • Use of Inspection Tools: Proficient in using measuring devices, diagnostic tools, drones, and digital photography for documentation.

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

Experience Requirements

Typical Experience Range:
