Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Conduct thorough, timely, and unbiased on-site investigations of residential and commercial property claims to determine cause, origin, and scope of loss.
  • Physically inspect and document property damage, which includes climbing ladders to assess roofs, entering confined spaces like crawlspaces, and navigating disaster-stricken areas.
  • Utilize industry-standard estimating software, primarily Xactimate or Symbility, to accurately write and review detailed structural and contents damage estimates.
  • Interpret complex insurance policy language, including forms, endorsements, and exclusions, to make precise coverage determinations for each claim.
  • Establish accurate and timely loss reserves for each claim and diligently manage and update them as the investigation progresses.
  • Negotiate fair and equitable claim settlements directly with insureds, contractors, public adjusters, and attorneys in accordance with policy provisions and jurisdictional regulations.
  • Clearly and empathetically communicate the claims process, coverage decisions, and settlement details to policyholders, ensuring they understand each step and their expectations are managed.
  • Proactively manage a personal inventory of claims, from first notice of loss through to final resolution, ensuring compliance with all internal and regulatory timelines.
  • Prepare comprehensive and well-documented claim file reports, including investigation notes, photographic evidence, diagrams, and correspondence.
  • Identify and meticulously document potential subrogation and salvage opportunities to mitigate financial losses for the company.
  • Maintain a high level of customer service, demonstrating compassion and professionalism to build trust and ensure a positive claims experience for our policyholders.
  • Adhere strictly to all state-specific Fair Claims Practices Acts and regulations, ensuring ethical and compliant claim handling at all times.
  • Effectively manage relationships with vendors, such as emergency service providers, engineers, and independent adjusters, to ensure quality and cost-effective outcomes.
  • Investigate and resolve claims of varying complexity, including those involving weather events (hail, wind, water), fire, theft, and vandalism.
  • Take recorded statements from insureds, claimants, and witnesses to gather all necessary facts and information related to the loss.
  • Operate independently in a remote/field environment, efficiently managing your schedule, routing, and administrative tasks to maximize productivity.
  • Maintain a constant state of readiness for potential deployment to catastrophe (CAT) zones to assist with high-volume claim events.
  • Control claim costs and loss adjustment expenses (LAE) through effective investigation, negotiation, and resource management.
  • Provide technical guidance and explain repair processes to policyholders, helping them understand the scope of work and contractor estimates.
  • Identify and promptly refer any claims with indicators of potential fraud to the Special Investigations Unit (SIU) for further review.
  • Continuously update knowledge on building codes, construction materials, repair techniques, and regional pricing trends.

Secondary Functions

  • Mentor and provide guidance to newer or less experienced adjusters on technical aspects of claim handling and estimating.
  • Participate in catastrophe (CAT) response duty on a rotational or as-needed basis, which may require travel on short notice.
  • Contribute to process improvement initiatives by providing feedback on field technology, claims handling guidelines, and customer service strategies.
  • Actively participate in ongoing training and professional development to maintain adjuster licensing and stay current with industry best practices.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Damage Estimating Software: High proficiency in Xactimate and/or Symbility for scoping and writing property damage estimates.
  • Insurance Policy Interpretation: Deep understanding of personal and commercial lines property policies and the ability to apply policy language to real-world scenarios.
  • Construction Knowledge: Strong knowledge of residential and commercial building materials, construction techniques, and repair methodologies.
  • Investigative Techniques: Skill in gathering facts, taking statements, and analyzing evidence to determine the cause of loss.

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

Experience Requirements

Typical Experience Range:

  • 2-7 years of experience in property claims adjusting, with a significant portion spent handling claims in the field.

  • Verifiable experience working as a field adjuster for a property and casualty insurance carrier.
  • Designation such as the Associate in Claims (AIC) or Chartered Property Casualty Underwriter (CPCU).
  • Experience with large-loss claims ($100k+) and/or catastrophe (CAT) duty deployment.
