Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Design and execute end-to-end field research projects, including defining research questions, selecting appropriate methodologies, and developing comprehensive research plans and timelines.
  • Travel to diverse field locations, both domestically and potentially internationally, to conduct immersive ethnographic studies, contextual inquiries, and observational research.
  • Lead the full lifecycle of participant recruitment, including developing screeners, sourcing candidates from various channels, and managing scheduling and compensation.
  • Develop, pilot, and refine research instruments such as semi-structured interview guides, focus group protocols, and survey questionnaires to ensure data quality and relevance.
  • Conduct engaging and insightful one-on-one in-depth interviews (IDIs) and facilitate dynamic focus groups to explore complex topics and uncover nuanced perspectives.
  • Systematically document field observations, interactions, and environmental factors using detailed field notes, photography, and video recordings.
  • Perform rigorous qualitative data analysis, including coding, thematic analysis, and synthesizing large volumes of unstructured data to identify key patterns, themes, and insights.
  • Translate complex research findings into compelling, actionable narratives and strategic recommendations for cross-functional teams, including product, design, and marketing.
  • Prepare and deliver impactful presentations, reports, and journey maps that clearly communicate research insights to stakeholders at all levels of the organization.
  • Manage project logistics for field studies, including budget tracking, travel arrangements, and securing necessary permits or access to research sites.
  • Uphold strict ethical standards in all research activities, ensuring participant confidentiality, informed consent, and data privacy.
  • Collaborate closely with quantitative researchers and data scientists to triangulate findings and create a holistic understanding of the subject matter.
  • Act as the "voice of the user/customer" within the organization, advocating for research-backed decisions and fostering a culture of empathy and curiosity.
  • Stay abreast of emerging research methodologies, tools, and best practices within the fields of qualitative research, ethnography, and user experience.
  • Build and maintain a network of contacts and key informants within relevant communities or industries to facilitate ongoing and future research efforts.
  • Skillfully moderate interviews and group discussions, adapting questioning techniques in real-time to probe deeper and explore emergent themes.
  • Analyze and interpret both verbal and non-verbal cues from participants to gain a deeper layer of understanding beyond their direct responses.
  • Ensure all collected data is meticulously organized, archived, and managed in compliance with company and regulatory standards.
  • Contribute to the creation of user personas, archetypes, and experience maps based on direct field research and data synthesis.
  • Train and mentor junior researchers or contract interviewers on best practices for field data collection and participant interaction.

Secondary Functions

  • Maintain and manage all field research equipment, including audio/video recorders, cameras, and other data collection tools.
  • Perform meticulous transcription and cleaning of qualitative data from interviews and focus groups.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Qualitative Data Analysis (QDA) Software: Proficiency in tools like NVivo, Dedoose, ATLAS.ti, or similar platforms for coding and analyzing qualitative data.
  • Ethnographic & Observational Methods: Deep expertise in conducting contextual inquiries, participant observation, and ethnographic fieldwork.
  • Interview & Moderation Techniques: Mastery of conducting semi-structured interviews, focus groups, and usability tests, including probing and active listening.
  • Survey Design & Tools: Experience creating and deploying surveys using platforms like Qualtrics, SurveyMonkey, or Google Forms.
  • Data Synthesis & Frameworks: Ability to synthesize large datasets into clear frameworks, such as thematic maps, journey maps, and personas.
  • Participant Recruitment & Management: Proven ability to design screeners and recruit representative participant samples for various research studies.
  • Project Management: Competency in managing research project timelines, budgets, and logistics, using tools like Asana, Trello, or Jira.
