Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

Perform comprehensive primary and secondary color correction and grading for a diverse range of projects, including feature films, episodic television, documentaries, commercials, and music videos.
Collaborate closely with Directors, Cinematographers (DPs), and VFX Supervisors during attended sessions to interpret their creative intent and translate abstract concepts into a tangible, compelling final look.
Establish, maintain, and refine the overall visual tone, mood, and color palette of a project, ensuring strict scene-to-scene continuity and a cohesive narrative flow.
Manage the complete Digital Intermediate (DI) pipeline, from conforming timelines (EDL/XML/AAF) to final color grading, titling, and the creation of master deliverables.
Expertly operate high-end color grading systems, primarily DaVinci Resolve and/or FilmLight Baselight, to perform complex image manipulation.
Balance and match footage captured on different cameras, lenses, and on different shooting days to create a seamless and unified visual experience.
Execute advanced color grading techniques, including precise object tracking with power windows, secondary keying (HSL, 3D), grain management, and sophisticated noise reduction.
Develop and implement robust color management workflows, working within various color spaces such as ACES, Log, and Rec.709/Rec.2020.
Create, manage, and distribute Look-Up Tables (LUTs) for on-set monitoring, dailies, and for integration into the VFX pipeline.
Lead client-attended grading sessions, effectively communicating creative choices, articulating technical considerations, and dynamically incorporating feedback in a high-pressure environment.
Conduct meticulous quality control (QC) reviews of final masters to identify and rectify any color artifacts, digital hits, or technical anomalies before delivery.
Ensure all final deliverables adhere to strict technical specifications, legal broadcast safety standards, and platform-specific requirements (e.g., Netflix, HBO, theatrical DCP).
Troubleshoot a wide range of technical issues related to color science, media management, software performance, and workflow integration.
Perform subtle but impactful cosmetic fixes, beauty work, sky replacements, and other minor visual effects tasks within the color grading suite.
Prepare and export a multitude of final deliverable versions, accounting for various codecs, wrappers, resolutions, aspect ratios, and HDR/SDR formats.
Maintain a deep understanding of various digital camera formats, RAW media, and their corresponding color science to maximize image quality from the source.
Liaise with Online Editors and VFX vendors to ensure seamless integration of final effects shots and graphics into the master timeline.
Proactively communicate project status, potential challenges, and delivery timelines with Producers, Post Supervisors, and production stakeholders.

Secondary Functions

Research and develop new color workflows and grading techniques to keep the facility at the cutting edge of post-production technology.
Provide mentorship, training, and technical guidance to Junior Colorists, Color Assistants, and interns within the department.
Assist in the regular calibration and maintenance of color-critical monitors, client displays, and theatrical projection systems to ensure a pristine and accurate viewing environment.
Contribute to the creation and documentation of facility-wide color pipelines and best practices in collaboration with the engineering and VFX departments.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

Expert-level proficiency in DaVinci Resolve and/or FilmLight Baselight, including the Fusion/OFX pages.
Deep, demonstrable understanding of color science, color theory, and digital image processing principles.
Comprehensive knowledge of professional camera formats (ARRI, RED, Sony, etc.), codecs, and RAW media workflows.
Proven experience implementing and managing ACES (Academy Color Encoding System) color pipelines.
Proficiency with post-production workflow tools for conforming, such as EDLs, XMLs, and AAFs.
Technical mastery of video scopes, including waveform monitors, vectorscopes, and histograms, for technical accuracy and creative guidance.
Experience with High Dynamic Range (HDR) grading and delivering for formats like Dolby Vision and HDR10.
Familiarity with data management, archival processes, and render queue management in a shared storage environment.
