Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Compose, arrange, and orchestrate original, compelling musical scores that enhance the narrative, mood, and emotional arc of a film.
  • Engage in deep, collaborative "spotting sessions" with the director, editor, and producers to determine the precise placement, style, and function of music throughout the film.
  • Develop strong, memorable melodic themes and leitmotifs for characters, settings, and ideas, and develop them throughout the score to support the narrative structure.
  • Produce high-quality, realistic electronic mockups and demos of the score using virtual instruments and sample libraries for director and producer approval before committing to live recording.
  • Lead and conduct recording sessions with live orchestras, chamber ensembles, or solo musicians, providing clear artistic direction to elicit the desired performance and emotional quality.
  • Oversee the entire music production pipeline, from initial composition and MIDI programming to the final mix and mastering of the score.
  • Collaborate closely with the music editor to ensure perfect and seamless synchronization of the score with the picture, accommodating frequent changes in the film edit.
  • Iterate on musical cues based on detailed feedback from the creative team, demonstrating flexibility and a commitment to achieving the director's vision through multiple revisions.
  • Analyze the script, dailies, and rough cuts to gain a profound understanding of character motivations, plot points, and subtext, translating these elements into a cohesive musical language.
  • Manage the music budget effectively, overseeing costs for musicians, recording studios, orchestrators, copyists, and engineers to deliver the score within financial parameters.
  • Supervise the work of the music team, which may include orchestrators, arrangers, copyists, and programmers, ensuring their work aligns with your creative intent.
  • Deliver all final music elements, including stems, stereo mixes, and 5.1 surround mixes, according to the technical specifications of the post-production sound department.
  • Ensure all composed music is original or properly licensed, and oversee the creation and delivery of accurate cue sheets for rights management and royalty administration.
  • Demonstrate stylistic versatility by composing effectively across a wide range of film genres, from intimate dramas to large-scale action, fantasy, and horror films.
  • Articulate complex musical ideas and concepts clearly to non-musician collaborators, such as directors and producers, fostering a positive and creative working relationship.

Secondary Functions

  • Conduct thorough research into specific historical periods, geographical locations, or musical genres to create an authentic and appropriate musical palette for the project.
  • Maintain a state-of-the-art project studio and stay current with the latest music production software, hardware, sample libraries, and audio technology to ensure a modern and efficient workflow.
  • Participate in test screenings and previews, gathering feedback on the score's effectiveness and making necessary adjustments before the final sound mix.
  • Liaise with the Music Supervisor to ensure a seamless integration between the original score and any licensed source music used in the film.

  • Provide musical alternatives and ad-hoc compositions based on sudden creative changes or new edits during the post-production process.
  • Contribute to the overall sonic strategy and musical identity of the film, working with the sound design team to create a cohesive aural world.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Expert proficiency in at least one major Digital Audio Workstation (DAW) such as Logic Pro X, Pro Tools, Cubase, or Digital Performer.
  • Mastery of music theory, harmony, counterpoint, and orchestration, both traditional and contemporary.
  • Advanced knowledge of MIDI sequencing and the ability to program highly realistic performances using virtual instruments and industry-standard sample libraries (e.g., Spitfire Audio, VSL, Cinesamples).
  • Fluency in reading and writing music notation using software like Sibelius or Finale for creating scores and parts for live musicians.
  • Solid understanding of audio engineering principles, including mixing, mastering, and audio post-production workflows.
  • Experience and confidence in conducting live ensembles, from small groups to full orchestras, in a studio recording environment.
  • Technical knowledge of syncing music to picture, including a deep understanding of SMPTE timecode and video formats.
  • Ability to manage complex project data, session files, and backups in an organized and professional manner.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

Master of Music (M.M.) or graduate diploma in Scoring for Film, Television, and Video Games.
