Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Read and interpret blueprints, work orders, material specifications and finish schedules to determine surface preparation, coating type, color, drying/curing requirements, and final finish standards before starting production.
  • Prepare surfaces through cleaning, degreasing, sanding, stripping, masking and other surface preparation methods to achieve required adhesion and visual quality prior to coating or polishing.
  • Operate and set up spray booths, HVLP and airless spray guns, powder coating equipment, dip tanks and related finishing machinery while maintaining proper spray techniques, pressures and distances to achieve uniform coverage.
  • Mix, measure and prepare paints, stains, solvents and coatings to exact ratios, including tinting and color matching, following manufacturer technical data sheets to achieve consistent finish and color accuracy.
  • Apply coatings, stains, sealers, lacquers, varnishes or protective finishes using spray, brush, roller or dip processes, ensuring even application, correct film build and compliance with production standards.
  • Sand, buff and polish parts using hand tools, orbital sanders, spindle polishers and rotary buffers to remove defects, orange peel, runs, and to achieve specified gloss and tactile finishes.
  • Inspect finished parts for surface defects such as runs, sags, fisheyes, orange peel, fish-eyes, pinholes and dust nibs, and perform touch-ups or rework as required to meet quality acceptance criteria.
  • Maintain in-process documentation including lot numbers, batch records, cure times, oven settings and quality check sheets to ensure traceability and compliance with internal and external audits.
  • Set up and adjust finishing machine parameters (temperature, conveyor speed, oven dwell time, air pressure) and validate process settings with first-article inspections for new or changed jobs.
  • Monitor drying and curing cycles in ovens, IR/UV units, and air-dry environments, verifying proper cure through physical tests or instrument readings as required by process specifications.
  • Perform regular preventative maintenance and cleaning of finishing equipment and booths, including filters, spray guns, hoses and exhaust systems to maintain performance and reduce downtime.
  • Follow and enforce hazardous materials handling protocols, including the safe measurement, storage and disposal of solvents, coatings, and hazardous waste in accordance with MSDS/SDS and local environmental regulations.
  • Use hand tools, calipers, micrometers and gauges to measure part dimensions and confirm that the finish and fit comply with engineering tolerances and cosmetic standards.
  • Troubleshoot common finishing process issues—such as adhesion failure, solvent popping, color mismatch and uneven film thickness—by adjusting surface prep, mix ratios, cure schedules or spraying technique and documenting root cause and corrective action.
  • Maintain production throughput by prioritizing workloads, staging parts for finishing, coordinating with upstream/downstream teams and meeting daily or weekly production targets while preserving quality.
  • Implement and follow lockout/tagout (LOTO), personal protective equipment (PPE) and other safety protocols for operating finishing equipment and handling hazardous chemicals.
  • Provide on-the-job guidance and mentoring to less-experienced finishers and temporary staff, transferring practical techniques and quality expectations.
  • Participate in continuous improvement initiatives to reduce rework, lower waste (overspray, rejected parts), improve color consistency and optimize process efficiency using lean or Six Sigma principles.
  • Coordinate with Quality, Production Planning and Materials teams to ensure parts are routed correctly, work instructions are current, and finishing schedules are met.
  • Perform final visual and tactile inspections, and sign-off on completed parts or assemblies before they are moved to packaging or shipping.
  • Maintain accurate inventory of finishing consumables (paints, solvents, abrasives, masking tape) and initiate reorder requests to prevent production delays.
  • Record environmental conditions (temperature, humidity) where required and adjust processes to compensate for variables that impact coating performance or cure.
  • Assist in validation and qualification of new finishing processes, materials or colors, including test panels, sample runs and documentation of results.
  • Operate forklift or material handling equipment as needed to stage parts for finishing and to move finished goods safely to the next production area.

Secondary Functions

  • Support production planning by reporting lead-time issues, material shortages, or equipment downtime that could impact finishing schedules.
  • Contribute to safety, quality and continuous improvement meetings and suggest practical process changes to increase yield and reduce defects.
  • Train and cross-train team members on finishing best practices and new equipment to broaden team capability and coverage.
  • Assist maintenance with diagnostic information and hands-on support during equipment repair or upgrades to minimize downtime.
  • Help maintain cleanroom or controlled-environment protocols when finishing parts for regulated industries (medical, aerospace) including gowning and contamination control.
  • Compile and provide finishing-related metrics (reject rates, cycle times, paint usage) to supervisors and manufacturing engineers for performance review.
