Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

Conduct comprehensive and systematic origin-and-cause investigations at residential, commercial, and industrial fire and explosion scenes.
Meticulously document, photograph, and diagram incident scenes, preserving the context and condition of evidence as found.
Identify, collect, handle, and preserve physical evidence in strict accordance with forensic best practices and legal chain-of-custody requirements.
Perform in-depth interviews and formal interrogations of witnesses, suspects, property owners, victims, and first responders to gather critical information.
Analyze fire dynamics, burn patterns, and heat transfer effects on structural materials to reconstruct the fire's sequence of events and spread.
Prepare exceptionally detailed, objective, and court-admissible investigative reports that clearly articulate findings, analysis, and conclusions.
Provide credible and effective expert testimony during depositions, administrative hearings, and criminal or civil court proceedings.
Collaborate extensively with local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies, prosecutor’s offices, and insurance company personnel.
Examine and analyze electrical wiring, mechanical equipment, and gas delivery systems to identify potential malfunctions or failure points as ignition sources.
Maintain and demonstrate expert-level knowledge of NFPA 921 (Guide for Fire and Explosion Investigations) and NFPA 1033 (Standard for Professional Qualifications for Fire Investigator).
Manage a caseload of multiple, complex investigations simultaneously, ensuring all reporting deadlines and client expectations are met.
Utilize and maintain a variety of specialized investigative equipment, including hydrocarbon detectors, advanced camera systems, and forensic sampling kits.
Conduct thorough background checks and financial record analysis to uncover potential motives for incendiary fires, including fraud or concealment of other crimes.
Coordinate large-scale, multi-agency scene investigations, effectively managing resources and delegating tasks to ensure a systematic and thorough process.
Evaluate potential subrogation and liability on behalf of insurance clients based on definitive investigative findings.
Maintain a high level of physical and mental fitness to safely operate for extended periods in hazardous, physically demanding, and emotionally taxing post-fire environments.
Develop and present fire prevention, safety, and arson awareness education programs to community groups, businesses, and public safety partners.
Review and critique investigative reports and case files prepared by other investigators to ensure accuracy, completeness, and adherence to scientific methodology.
Apply a systematic, scientific method to all facets of the investigation, from initial scene assessment to final case disposition and legal testimony.
Engage with and manage third-party experts, such as electrical and mechanical engineers, to assist with highly technical aspects of an investigation.
Respond to incident scenes in a timely manner, often on a 24/7 on-call basis, and assume scene command for the investigative portion of the incident.
Perform live-fire testing and research in controlled environments to test and validate hypotheses related to fire growth and cause.

Secondary Functions

Participate in the peer review of case files and reports to ensure quality control and adherence to departmental and industry standards.
Assist in the development and delivery of internal training programs for new investigators, adjusters, and law enforcement partners.
Maintain all issued investigative equipment, vehicles, and personal protective equipment (PPE) in a constant state of readiness.

Education & Experience

Educational Background
