Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Conduct routine inspections, functional testing, and preventative maintenance on a variety of fire alarm systems, including addressable and conventional panels, initiating devices, and notification appliances.
  • Perform service, repair, and troubleshooting of complex fire alarm system malfunctions, identifying root causes of ground faults, short circuits, and intermittent issues.
  • Inspect, test, and maintain water-based fire suppression systems, including wet, dry, pre-action, and deluge sprinkler systems, as well as fire pumps and standpipes, in accordance with NFPA 25.
  • Service and maintain special hazard suppression systems, such as clean agent systems (FM-200, Novec 1230) and commercial kitchen hood fire suppression systems.
  • Execute the installation, programming, and commissioning of new fire alarm and security systems, ensuring they meet design specifications and code requirements.
  • Perform thorough inspections, maintenance, and recharging of portable fire extinguishers and emergency/exit lighting systems to ensure they are operational and compliant.
  • Accurately and meticulously complete all required documentation, including inspection reports, service tickets, and deficiency logs, using digital reporting software and platforms.
  • Read, interpret, and work from blueprints, schematics, wiring diagrams, and technical manuals to diagnose and resolve system issues effectively.
  • Identify and document system deficiencies and code violations, providing clients with clear, detailed recommendations and proposals for corrective action.
  • Manage and maintain an organized inventory of parts, tools, and equipment in a service vehicle to ensure readiness for service calls.
  • Respond to emergency service calls, often outside of normal business hours, to provide timely and effective resolution to critical system failures.

Perform system modifications, upgrades, and retrofits, ensuring minimal disruption to client operations.

  • Verify fire alarm system communications by testing dialers and communication pathways to central monitoring stations.
  • Conduct sensitivity and functional testing of smoke detectors and other detection devices to ensure their reliability.
  • Ensure all work performed adheres strictly to NFPA standards (especially NFPA 72, 25, 13, and 10), manufacturer guidelines, and all applicable federal, state, and local codes.

Secondary Functions

  • Provide exceptional customer service by communicating clearly with clients, explaining inspection results, and answering technical questions.
  • Liaise with Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ), including local fire marshals and building inspectors, during system acceptance testing and inspections.
  • Mentor and provide on-the-job training for apprentice technicians, sharing knowledge of codes, systems, and best practices.
  • Participate in an on-call rotation schedule to provide 24/7 emergency support to clients.
  • Proactively stay current with new fire protection technologies, industry trends, and revisions to national and local fire codes.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Deep knowledge of NFPA 72 (Fire Alarm and Signaling Code) and NFPA 25 (Standard for the Inspection, Testing, and Maintenance of Water-Based Fire Protection Systems).
  • Proficiency in troubleshooting and servicing fire alarm control panels from major manufacturers (e.g., Notifier, SimplexGrinnell, Edwards/EST, Siemens, Gamewell-FCI).
  • Strong understanding of electrical principles, low-voltage wiring, and electronic circuit theory.
  • Ability to read and interpret complex blueprints, riser diagrams, and technical schematics.
  • Experience with fire sprinkler systems, fire pumps, and special hazard/suppression systems.
  • NICET Certification in Fire Alarm Systems (Level I, II, or higher) is highly desirable.
  • Proficiency with digital inspection software and mobile reporting tools.
  • Valid state-issued driver's license and a clean driving record.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • High School Diploma or GED.

Preferred Education:

  • Associate's Degree or certificate from a technical/trade school.
  • Completion of a recognized apprenticeship program.

Experience Requirements

Typical Experience Range:

  • 2-5 years of direct, hands-on experience in the inspection, testing, and maintenance of fire alarm and/or fire sprinkler systems.

Preferred:

  • 5+ years of field experience in the fire and life safety industry, accompanied by relevant state licenses and/or a NICET Level II (or higher) certification. Experience across a wide range of systems and manufacturers is a significant plus.
