🎯 Role Definition

As a Fire Systems Operator, you are the vigilant guardian of our facility's life safety infrastructure. Stationed in a central control room, you will serve as the first point of contact for all fire alarm and suppression system activities. This critical role involves continuous monitoring of advanced fire alarm control panels, interpreting system signals, and executing precise emergency response protocols. You will be responsible for dispatching internal response teams and external emergency services, maintaining meticulous event logs, and ensuring all systems are compliant and fully operational. Your ability to remain calm and decisive under pressure is paramount to protecting people, property, and critical assets.

📈 Career Progression

Typical Career Path

Entry Point From:

  • Fire Alarm Technician Apprentice
  • Security Operations Center (SOC) Operator
  • Maintenance Technician with electrical/electronics experience

Advancement To:

  • Lead Fire Systems Operator / Shift Supervisor
  • Fire Protection Systems Specialist
  • Facilities Operations Manager

Lateral Moves:

  • Building Automation Systems (BAS) Operator
  • Security Systems Administrator

Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Continuously monitor the status of all fire alarm, detection, and suppression systems across multiple facilities using centralized monitoring software and graphic user interfaces.
  • Act as the primary dispatcher for all fire-related emergencies, promptly and accurately relaying critical information to internal response teams, security personnel, and local fire departments.
  • Respond to and interpret a variety of system signals, including alarm, supervisory, and trouble conditions, and initiate the appropriate standard operating procedures for each.
  • Maintain a detailed and accurate electronic log of all system events, operator actions, dispatches, and communications for compliance and incident review purposes.
  • Perform routine operational checks, inspections, and functional tests on fire alarm control panels (FACPs), annunciators, and related life safety equipment to ensure system readiness.
  • Manage and coordinate system impairments, including scheduling, notification to stakeholders, and implementation of fire watch procedures as required by code.
  • Acknowledge, silence, and reset fire alarm systems following the resolution of an incident, ensuring the system is returned to a normal operational state.
  • Troubleshoot basic system faults and anomalies, creating detailed work orders and coordinating with fire alarm technicians or service vendors for timely repairs.
  • Operate and manage integrated systems, such as building automation (BAS) and security systems, to execute fire response sequences like HVAC shutdown, smoke control activation, and door unlocking.
  • Provide clear, calm, and concise instructions to building occupants and stakeholders via public address systems or other communication channels during drills and actual emergencies.
  • Review and interpret fire system riser diagrams, floor plans, and sequence of operations documentation to maintain a thorough understanding of the protected premises.
  • Generate regular and ad-hoc reports on system status, incident history, alarm frequency, and maintenance activities for management and compliance audits.
  • Assist in the development and refinement of emergency response protocols, post orders, and standard operating procedures (SOPs).
  • Participate in and provide support for regulatory inspections and system acceptance testing conducted by authorities having jurisdiction (AHJs) and third-party agencies.
  • Manage user access and permissions within the fire alarm monitoring software to ensure system security and integrity.
  • Conduct and document periodic fire drills and evacuation exercises in coordination with the Environmental Health & Safety (EHS) department.
  • Monitor and maintain the operational status of specialized suppression systems, such as pre-action, deluge, clean agent (FM-200, Novec 1230), and kitchen hood systems.
  • Utilize computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS) to track work orders, service calls, and preventative maintenance schedules for all life safety equipment.
  • Verify the functionality of communication pathways, including phone lines (DACTs), cellular communicators, and IP-based monitoring networks.
  • Provide remote support to field technicians during system testing and troubleshooting, helping to diagnose issues from the central control station.

Secondary Functions

  • Support ad-hoc data requests and exploratory data analysis related to alarm trends and system performance.
  • Contribute to the organization's life safety strategy and technology roadmap by providing operational insights.
  • Collaborate with project management teams during system upgrades or new construction to ensure operational needs are met.
  • Participate in sprint planning and agile ceremonies if the operations team utilizes agile methodologies for process improvement.
