Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Develop, refine, and deliver comprehensive firearms training curricula covering safety, fundamental marksmanship, advanced shooting techniques, and tactical applications for pistols, rifles, and shotguns.
  • Conduct classroom instruction on firearms safety rules, nomenclature, mechanical operation, and the legal aspects of firearm ownership and use of force.
  • Provide hands-on, live-fire coaching on the shooting range, offering individualized feedback to students of varying skill levels to improve their marksmanship and gun-handling proficiency.
  • Act as the primary Range Safety Officer (RSO) during all live-fire exercises, vigilantly monitoring the firing line to enforce all safety protocols and immediately correcting any unsafe actions.
  • Demonstrate and teach proper firearm manipulation skills, including loading, unloading, reloading, and the safe and efficient clearing of common malfunctions under stress.
  • Instruct students on defensive shooting principles, including drawing from a holster, use of cover and concealment, movement, and engaging multiple targets.
  • Evaluate and document student performance, providing constructive feedback and written assessments to certify proficiency and identify areas for further development.
  • Maintain a deep and current understanding of federal, state, and local laws pertaining to firearms, self-defense, and the use of deadly force.
  • Create realistic training scenarios and drills that challenge students and reinforce learning objectives in a controlled, safe environment.
  • Ensure all training is conducted in accordance with established standards from governing bodies such as the NRA, POST (Peace Officer Standards and Training), or other relevant state agencies.
  • Provide expert instruction on the proper cleaning, maintenance, and storage of various firearm platforms to ensure their reliability and longevity.
  • Manage class logistics, including student registration, waiver signing, and the distribution of ammunition and safety equipment.
  • Customize training programs to meet the specific needs of private groups, corporate clients, or law enforcement agencies.
  • Foster a positive, supportive, and inclusive learning atmosphere that encourages questions and active participation from all students.
  • Stay current with emerging trends, techniques, and technologies in firearms, tactical gear, and training methodologies to ensure curriculum relevance.

Secondary Functions

  • Perform routine inspection, maintenance, and minor repairs on all academy-owned firearms, training aids, and range equipment.
  • Manage and maintain inventory of ammunition, targets, cleaning supplies, and other consumable training materials, submitting purchase requests as needed.
  • Assist in the design, construction, and upkeep of shooting range facilities, including backstops, target systems, and safety baffles.
  • Contribute to the organization's marketing efforts by participating in promotional events, writing blog posts, or creating instructional video content.
  • Support administrative duties, including scheduling classes, maintaining training records, and responding to customer inquiries via phone and email.
  • Collaborate with other instructors to peer-review course content and co-teach specialized workshops or advanced-level courses.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Expert-Level Firearms Proficiency: Demonstrated mastery in the safe and effective use of a wide range of firearms, including semi-automatic pistols, revolvers, AR-platform rifles, and pump-action/semi-auto shotguns.
  • Instructor Certifications: Verifiable instructor credentials from a nationally recognized organization (e.g., NRA Law Enforcement Instructor, Pistol/Rifle/Shotgun Instructor; USCCA Instructor; POST-certified Firearms Instructor).
  • Range Safety Officer (RSO) Certification: Certified and experienced in managing a live-fire range environment and enforcing safety protocols.
  • Curriculum Development: Ability to design and write clear, concise, and effective lesson plans, student manuals, and PowerPoint presentations for firearms courses.
  • Technical/Mechanical Knowledge: Strong understanding of firearm mechanics, ballistics, and function, with the ability to diagnose and troubleshoot common weapon malfunctions.
  • Armorer Skills: Basic or advanced armorer certification for common platforms (e.g., Glock, AR-15, Remington 870) is highly desirable.
  • First Aid/Trauma Care: Certification and practical knowledge in emergency first aid and treating traumatic injuries, such as gunshot wounds (e.g., TCCC, TECC, "Stop the Bleed").

  • Communication & Public Speaking: Exceptional ability to clearly articulate complex concepts to a diverse audience, both in a classroom and on a noisy range.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Verifiable, current Firearms Instructor certification from a nationally recognized organization (NRA, USCCA, etc.) or a government entity (Military, Law Enforcement).

Preferred Education:

  • Associate's or Bachelor's degree.

Experience Requirements

Typical Experience Range: 3-5+ years of documented experience in a role requiring regular firearms use and instruction, such as law enforcement, military service, or professional security.

  • 5+ years of experience as a primary firearms instructor for a law enforcement agency, military unit (especially special operations), or a reputable private training academy.
  • Verifiable experience in developing and implementing firearms training programs from the ground up.
  • Experience in competitive shooting (e.g., USPSA, IDPA, 3-Gun) is a significant plus.
