Core Responsibilities
Primary Functions
- Proactively engage with customers to understand their specific needs, providing expert consultation on firearm selection, features, and applications for hunting, sport shooting, or personal defense.
- Meticulously and accurately complete all federal, state, and local documentation for firearm transactions, including ATF Form 4473 and background check processing, ensuring 100% compliance.
- Maintain a deep and current knowledge of all firearms, ammunition, optics, and related accessories in the store's inventory to answer customer questions effectively.
- Conduct all firearm sales and transfers in strict accordance with Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) regulations and company policies.
- Safely and confidently demonstrate firearm handling, including showing customers how to check if a firearm is clear, field strip for cleaning, and operate its features.
- Manage and maintain the integrity of the ATF "bound book" (Acquisition and Disposition records), ensuring all entries are accurate, timely, and legible.
- Assist customers with special orders for firearms or accessories that are not currently in stock, managing the process from order to customer pickup.
- Actively listen to customer needs and provide tailored recommendations, upselling and cross-selling relevant accessories such as cleaning kits, safes, optics, and training courses.
- Maintain a pristine, organized, and secure firearms counter and display area, ensuring all products are properly presented and all security protocols are followed.
- Receive, log, and securely store incoming firearm shipments, verifying serial numbers against shipping manifests and acquisition records.
- Handle firearm trade-in evaluations, assessing the condition and market value of used firearms and clearly explaining the trade-in value to the customer.
- Process and manage firearm returns, repairs, and warranty claims, coordinating with manufacturers and gunsmiths as necessary.
- Stay informed about industry trends, new product releases, and changes in local, state, and federal firearms laws to serve as a reliable resource for customers and staff.
- Educate customers on the principles of firearm safety, responsible ownership, and secure storage options.
- Perform daily and periodic inventory counts of firearms and regulated accessories to prevent loss and ensure record accuracy.
- Operate the Point of Sale (POS) system efficiently to process sales, returns, and special orders for all department merchandise.
- Address customer concerns or complaints with professionalism and a problem-solving mindset, escalating to management when appropriate.
- Participate in and contribute to regular team meetings and training sessions focused on product knowledge, sales techniques, and compliance updates.
- Visually merchandise products, ensuring displays are attractive, fully stocked, and compliant with all security and safety standards.
- Build and maintain long-term customer relationships through exceptional service, follow-up communication, and a trustworthy demeanor.

- ATF Compliance & Form 4473 Proficiency: Expert-level understanding and flawless execution of ATF regulations, background check procedures, and the 4473 form.
- Deep Knowledge of Firearm Platforms: Comprehensive knowledge of various firearm types (pistol, rifle, shotgun), actions, brands, and their intended uses.
- Ammunition & Ballistics Knowledge: Strong understanding of ammunition types, calibers, and basic ballistics to guide customer selection.
