Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Proactively engage with customers to understand their needs, preferences, and experience level to recommend appropriate firearms, ammunition, and accessories.
  • Manage the entire firearms sales process, including the accurate and meticulous completion of all federal (ATF Form 4473) and state-required paperwork.
  • Conduct NICS background checks in strict accordance with all applicable laws and company policies, ensuring 100% compliance.
  • Educate customers on firearm safety, responsible ownership, proper handling, cleaning, and storage techniques.
  • Demonstrate comprehensive knowledge of a wide range of firearms, including handguns, rifles, and shotguns, as well as optics, ammunition, and related accessories.
  • Maintain a deep understanding of and adherence to all federal, state, and local laws, regulations, and ordinances governing the sale and transfer of firearms.
  • Process special orders for customers, providing accurate timelines and maintaining communication throughout the process until the product arrives.
  • Assist customers with firearm trades and consignments, accurately assessing value and completing all necessary documentation.
  • Drive sales to meet and exceed individual and department sales goals while maintaining a high level of customer satisfaction.
  • Handle and resolve customer inquiries, concerns, and complaints with professionalism and a solutions-oriented mindset.
  • Verify customer eligibility to purchase firearms, including age and residency requirements, for every transaction.
  • Maintain the integrity and accuracy of the firearm Acquisition and Disposition (A&D) logbook, ensuring every firearm is properly accounted for.
  • Provide expert guidance on accessories such as scopes, holsters, cleaning supplies, and safes to enhance the customer's purchase and overall experience.

Secondary Functions

  • Assist in receiving, logging, and securely storing incoming firearm shipments according to ATF regulations and company procedures.
  • Participate in regular inventory counts and audits of firearms and accessories to ensure inventory accuracy and loss prevention.
  • Maintain the cleanliness, organization, and professional appearance of the firearms counter, showcases, and surrounding sales floor.
  • Create and maintain appealing product displays and merchandising for firearms and related products to attract customers and drive sales.
  • Stay current with new industry trends, product releases, and changes in firearms legislation to serve as a knowledgeable resource.
  • Support other store departments as needed, demonstrating a collaborative and team-oriented attitude.
  • Answer phone calls and respond to electronic inquiries regarding firearm availability, services, and general questions.
  • Assist in the training and mentoring of new associates on department procedures, product knowledge, and compliance standards.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Extensive Firearms Knowledge: Deep understanding of various firearm types, actions, calibers, manufacturers, and their appropriate applications.
  • ATF & NICS Compliance: Proven experience and proficiency in accurately completing ATF Form 4473 and processing NICS background checks.
  • Regulatory Expertise: In-depth knowledge of federal, state, and local laws pertaining to the sale, transfer, and possession of firearms.
  • Point of Sale (POS) Proficiency: Experience operating POS systems for sales transactions, inventory lookups, and customer management.
  • A&D Logbook Management: Skill in maintaining a meticulous and compliant Acquisition and Disposition book.
  • Retail Sales Acumen: Demonstrated ability to drive sales, upsell, and cross-sell related products in a retail environment.
  • Inventory Control: Experience with inventory management processes, including receiving, stocking, and cycle counting.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent (GED).
  • Must be at least 21 years of age and legally eligible to purchase and possess firearms.

Preferred Education:

  • Associate's or Bachelor's Degree.

Relevant Fields of Study:

  • Business Administration
  • Criminal Justice
  • Retail Management

Experience Requirements

Typical Experience Range: 2-5+ years in a customer-facing role.

Preferred: At least 1-2 years of direct experience in firearms retail sales or a role with significant FFL compliance responsibilities. Experience as a firearms instructor, range officer, or in a related military/law enforcement field is highly valued.
