- Load heavy logs and rounds onto the log splitter's feeding mechanism, either manually or with the assistance of mechanical equipment like a log lift or skid steer.
- Manage the outfeed of split wood, guiding it onto conveyor belts or into designated sorting bins for seasoning and storage.
- Stack split firewood neatly and securely in designated bays or on pallets, ensuring proper airflow for optimal drying and maximizing yard space.
- Perform and document routine pre-operational checks and preventative maintenance on all processing equipment, including greasing fittings, checking hydraulic fluid, and cleaning air filters.
- Maintain an exceptionally clean and organized work area by regularly clearing debris, sawdust, and bark to ensure a safe and efficient operational environment.
- Identify different wood species (e.g., oak, maple, birch, ash) and sort them according to company standards and customer orders.
- Assess the quality of incoming logs, identifying and discarding any pieces with excessive rot, disease, or pests to maintain a high-quality end product.
- Adhere strictly to all company safety protocols and OSHA guidelines, consistently wearing and maintaining all required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) such as steel-toed boots, safety glasses, chaps, and hearing protection.
- Sharpen chainsaw chains and perform minor field adjustments to ensure optimal cutting performance and to extend the life of the equipment.
- Monitor equipment performance continuously during operation, listening for unusual noises or signs of malfunction and reporting any issues to the Yard Foreman immediately.
- Assist in the loading of customer vehicles or company delivery trucks, accurately measuring and handling quantities of wood by the cord, face cord, or bundle.
- Operate other yard machinery such as forklifts, skid steers, or front-end loaders to move large quantities of logs, processed firewood, and waste materials.
- Bundle and wrap firewood into smaller, retail-ready packages for sale at convenience stores and campgrounds.
- Keep simple but accurate daily records of production volumes, hours operated, and processed wood inventory to assist with production planning.
- Endure and perform physically demanding tasks for extended 8-10 hour shifts in a variety of outdoor weather conditions, including extreme heat, cold, rain, and snow.
- Communicate effectively and professionally with team members to coordinate workflow from the log deck to the final stacking area, ensuring a smooth and continuous process.
- Contribute to the overall efficiency of the wood yard by suggesting process improvements and proactively assisting other team members during downtime.
- Manage the flow of raw materials (logs) to the processing station to prevent bottlenecks and ensure an uninterrupted workflow throughout the day.
- Accurately measure and cut firewood to specific lengths (e.g., 16", 18", 22") based on customer requirements or specific product specifications for different stove types.
Secondary Functions
- Assist with local firewood deliveries to residential and commercial customers, which includes customer interaction and unloading.
- Participate in semi-annual physical inventory counts of both raw logs and processed firewood.
- Operate other light equipment as needed, such as wood chippers or stump grinders, after receiving proper training and certification.
- Perform general site maintenance and cleanup duties, including snow removal in winter and groundskeeping in summer, to ensure a safe and accessible facility.
