Core Responsibilities
Primary Functions
- Proactively engage with customers to understand their specific fishing needs, whether for freshwater, saltwater, or fly fishing, and provide expert, tailored product recommendations.
- Drive department sales by leveraging in-depth product knowledge to effectively communicate features, benefits, and applications of rods, reels, tackle, and marine electronics.
- Deliver an exceptional level of customer service by building rapport, sharing personal fishing knowledge and local insights, and ensuring every customer feels valued and confident in their purchases.
- Demonstrate the proper use, setup, and maintenance of fishing equipment, including professionally spooling line onto reels and demonstrating casting techniques.
- Actively promote and process sales for store loyalty programs, warranties, licenses, and special promotions to enhance customer value and meet sales targets.
- Maintain a deep and current understanding of our entire fishing product assortment, including new arrivals, brand differentiators, and technological advancements in the industry.
- Assist customers with troubleshooting equipment issues, offering solutions and coordinating with service or repair departments when necessary.
- Confidently and accurately operate the Point-of-Sale (POS) system to process transactions, including sales, returns, and special orders.
- Build and maintain a loyal customer base by providing follow-up advice and creating a reputation as a trusted local fishing expert.
- Stay informed about local fishing regulations, seasons, and conservation efforts to provide responsible and accurate information to the angling community.
Secondary Functions
- Support ad-hoc data requests and exploratory data analysis to identify local sales trends and popular products.
- Contribute to the organization's data strategy and roadmap by providing on-the-ground feedback on customer preferences and buying habits.
- Collaborate with business units to translate data needs into engineering requirements, such as reporting on inventory velocity for specific lure categories.
- Participate in sprint planning and agile ceremonies within the data engineering team if involved in cross-functional analytics projects.
- Execute visual merchandising directives to create compelling product displays that are well-organized, fully stocked, and visually appealing.
- Manage departmental inventory by assisting with receiving, unpacking, and stocking merchandise, as well as performing regular cycle counts to ensure accuracy.
- Ensure the fishing department is consistently clean, safe, and easy to shop, promptly addressing any potential hazards or messes.
- Assist in the planning, setup, and execution of in-store events, such as fishing seminars, pro-staff appearances, and product demonstration days.
- Provide support to other departments within the store during peak traffic periods, demonstrating a collaborative and team-first attitude.
- Participate actively in all required training sessions on products, sales techniques, and company policies to continuously improve performance.
- Use store communication systems to effectively collaborate with team members, leads, and managers regarding customer needs and department status.

- Fishing Techniques Expertise: Practical knowledge of different angling methods, such as fly fishing, baitcasting, spinning, trolling, and jigging.
- Line Spooling & Basic Repair: Ability to properly spool various types of line on different reels and perform minor rod and reel maintenance (e.g., tip replacement).
- POS & Retail Systems Proficiency: Experience operating retail point-of-sale systems for transactions, returns, and inventory lookups.
- Marine Electronics Familiarity: Understanding of the basic functions and benefits of fish finders, GPS units, and trolling motors.
