Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Assist the Captain in the safe navigation and maneuvering of the vessel, including standing watch, plotting courses, and utilizing radar, GPS, and sonar systems to travel to and from fishing grounds.
  • Supervise and coordinate all activities of the deck crew, delegating tasks related to gear deployment, catch processing, and vessel maintenance to ensure operational efficiency and safety.
  • Operate and maintain complex deck machinery, including hydraulic winches, net reels, power blocks, longline haulers, and cranes, performing routine checks and troubleshooting to prevent downtime.
  • Oversee the precise deployment, handling, and retrieval of all fishing gear (trawls, pots, longlines, seines) in accordance with best practices and environmental regulations.
  • Direct the on-deck sorting, grading, and processing of the catch, ensuring adherence to quality control standards to preserve the product's value from net to hold.
  • Enforce and uphold all vessel safety protocols, leading regular emergency drills for fire, man-overboard, and abandon ship scenarios to ensure crew preparedness.
  • Assume command of the vessel and crew in the absence of the Captain, demonstrating decisive leadership and sound judgment in all operational and safety matters.
  • Continuously monitor weather forecasts and sea conditions, providing critical input to the Captain to make informed decisions about safety, routing, and fishing strategy.
  • Ensure the vessel and its operations remain in strict compliance with all local, federal, and international fishing laws, including catch reporting, bycatch reduction, and gear regulations.
  • Act as the primary medical responder for the crew, administering first aid for injuries or illnesses at sea and maintaining the vessel's medical supplies.
  • Manage the safe and efficient loading and unloading of catch, gear, fuel, and provisions while in port, coordinating with shore-side staff and logistics teams.
  • Lead by example on deck, actively participating in all fishing operations to set the pace and standard for the rest of the crew.
  • Conduct rigorous quality control inspections on the catch as it comes aboard, assessing species, size, and condition to ensure it meets market and processor specifications.
  • Manage and operate the vessel's fish hold systems, including refrigeration, brine, or freezer units, constantly monitoring temperatures to guarantee the preservation and quality of the catch.
  • Take primary responsibility for the general upkeep and maintenance of the vessel's hull, deck, and superstructure, including tasks like painting, rust removal, and minor repairs.

Secondary Functions

  • Train, mentor, and develop junior deckhands, instructing them on proper seamanship, gear handling techniques, and critical safety procedures to build a competent and cohesive crew.
  • Maintain a detailed and accurate vessel logbook, meticulously recording navigational data, fishing activities, catch composition, and any significant operational or safety incidents.
  • Manage the onboard inventory of fishing gear components, deck supplies, and safety equipment, reporting deficiencies to the Captain to ensure the vessel is always properly provisioned.
  • Serve as the key communication link between the Captain and the deck crew, clearly relaying orders, operational plans, and safety information.
  • Assist the vessel's Engineer with routine checks and minor maintenance tasks in the engine room as directed, fostering a broader understanding of the vessel's mechanical systems.
  • Operate the vessel's communication equipment, including VHF and SSB radios and satellite systems, to communicate effectively with other vessels, shore management, and emergency services.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

Experience Requirements

Typical Experience Range:

A minimum of 3-5 years of proven, hands-on experience as a full-time Deckhand on a commercial fishing vessel.

Preferred:

Prior experience in a senior deckhand or Deck Boss role. Verifiable experience on vessels of a similar size and in the same fishery (e.g., trawler, longliner, crabber) is highly advantageous. A 100-ton or higher Mate's license is often preferred or required.
