As a Fishing Instructor and Guide, you are the face of our outdoor program, responsible for creating and delivering world-class angling experiences. This position combines expert fishing knowledge with a passion for teaching and hospitality. You will guide guests on local waters, provide hands-on instruction in various fishing disciplines (such as fly fishing, spin casting), and instill an appreciation for aquatic ecosystems and conservation. Your primary objective is to ensure every guest has a safe, educational, and profoundly enjoyable time, regardless of their prior experience, ultimately turning a simple fishing trip into a lasting memory.

Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Deliver high-quality, patient, and clear instruction on fishing techniques, including but not limited to fly casting, spin casting, knot tying, and lure/fly selection.
  • Lead guided fishing trips on local lakes, rivers, and streams, navigating safely and selecting locations based on weather, water conditions, and fish activity.
  • Customize each instructional session and guided trip to the specific skill levels, physical abilities, and personal goals of a diverse clientele, from complete beginners to seasoned anglers.
  • Provide expert knowledge on local fish species, their habitats, behaviors, and effective methods for targeting them throughout different seasons.
  • Demonstrate and enforce proper catch-and-release techniques to minimize stress on fish and promote the long-term health of the fishery.
  • Act as a primary safety officer on the water, conducting pre-trip safety briefings and maintaining constant vigilance to mitigate potential risks associated with weather, wildlife, and water hazards.
  • Educate guests on local ecology, conservation issues, and the importance of ethical angling practices and environmental stewardship.
  • Proactively manage the guest experience, ensuring clients are comfortable, engaged, and enjoying their time through excellent communication and storytelling.
  • Assist guests with rigging tackle, selecting appropriate gear from inventory, and performing minor on-the-water equipment repairs to prevent loss of fishing time.
  • Read water conditions, currents, and structures to strategically position guests for the highest probability of success.
  • Maintain a professional and positive demeanor at all times, adeptly handling challenges and managing group dynamics to ensure a positive atmosphere.
  • Operate and maintain watercraft, such as drift boats, rafts, or motorboats, with a high degree of skill and adherence to all boating safety regulations.

Secondary Functions

  • Meticulously clean, maintain, and organize all company-owned fishing equipment, including rods, reels, waders, boots, and tackle after each use.
  • Conduct regular inventory checks of all fishing-related supplies and equipment, reporting any needs for repair, replacement, or restocking to management.
  • Assist in the development and planning of new fishing programs, clinics, and special events to attract a wider range of guests.
  • Capture high-quality photos and videos of guests and their catches (with permission) for their personal use and for the company's marketing materials.
  • Stay current on all local, state, and federal fishing regulations and ensure both personal and client compliance at all times.
  • Provide detailed trip reports, including guest feedback, fish counts, and any notable observations about conditions or wildlife.
  • Contribute to retail operations by offering expert advice to customers and assisting with sales of fishing gear, tackle, and apparel.
  • Participate in habitat improvement projects, stream clean-ups, and other conservation initiatives organized by the company or local partners.
  • Act as a brand ambassador, positively representing the company both on and off the water within the local community and fishing industry.
  • Collaborate with other departments, such as reservations and hospitality, to ensure a seamless and integrated guest experience from booking to departure.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Advanced Angling Proficiency: Demonstrable expertise in multiple fishing disciplines, especially fly fishing and spin casting.
  • Casting Instruction: Ability to break down and teach various casting strokes (e.g., overhead cast, roll cast, Spey cast) effectively.
  • Entomology & Fly Selection: Strong knowledge of aquatic insects and other food sources to inform fly/lure selection.
  • Water Reading: Skilled at interpreting river currents, lake structures, and other environmental cues to locate fish.
  • Knot Tying: Mastery of essential fishing knots (e.g., Improved Clinch, Surgeon's Knot, Blood Knot) and the ability to teach them.
  • Boating Operations: Certified or highly proficient in operating drift boats, rafts, or motorized vessels relevant to the fishery.
  • First Aid & CPR/AED: Current certification is mandatory for ensuring guest safety in remote environments.
  • Gear Maintenance & Repair: Competency in maintaining and performing field repairs on rods, reels, lines, and other tackle.
  • Regulatory Knowledge: In-depth understanding of local and state fishing licenses, seasons, and catch limits.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Current First Aid and CPR/AED Certification.
  • State-required guide license and/or boating safety certification.

Preferred Education:

  • Associate's or Bachelor's Degree.

Relevant Fields of Study:

  • Outdoor Recreation Management
  • Environmental Science or Fisheries Biology
  • Hospitality and Tourism Management

Experience Requirements

Typical Experience Range: 2-5 years of extensive personal fishing experience, particularly in the local region, combined with some experience in a teaching, coaching, or customer-facing role.

Preferred: 3+ years of professional experience as a fishing guide or instructor, with a verifiable history of providing high-quality guest experiences. Experience operating drift boats or other watercraft in challenging conditions is highly desirable.
