Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Proactively engage with customers on the sales floor to build rapport and understand their specific fishing needs, from beginner to expert level.
  • Provide expert advice and personalized recommendations on a wide range of fishing tackle, including rods, reels, lines, lures, and terminal tackle.
  • Demonstrate the proper use and advanced features of fishing equipment, such as baitcasting reels, electronic fish finders, and trolling motors.
  • Share personal and professional knowledge of local fishing spots, target species, current regulations, and seasonal patterns to enhance the customer's on-the-water experience.
  • Assist customers in obtaining the correct fishing licenses and tags, providing clear information on local, state, and federal fishing laws.
  • Accurately and efficiently process customer transactions using the Point of Sale (POS) system, including sales, returns, special orders, and exchanges.
  • Skillfully spool new fishing line onto customer reels, ensuring proper tension and knot-tying for various line types like monofilament, fluorocarbon, and braid.
  • Handle customer inquiries, concerns, and complaints with a positive, patient, and solution-oriented attitude to ensure a satisfactory resolution.
  • Promote and clearly explain store loyalty programs, current promotions, and value-added services like extended warranties or guided trips.
  • Stay informed about industry trends, new product launches, and competitor activities to maintain your status as a trusted authority in the fishing community.
  • Answer departmental phone calls, providing excellent service and accurate information to callers seeking product availability or fishing advice.
  • Conduct or assist with in-store seminars, workshops, and fishing-related events to foster community engagement and drive traffic.

Secondary Functions

  • Execute visual merchandising strategies by setting up, maintaining, and organizing product displays to be visually appealing and drive sales.
  • Diligently manage and replenish stock on the sales floor and in back-stock areas to ensure products are available and well-represented at all times.
  • Participate in regular inventory counts and cycle counts to ensure accuracy and assist with receiving and processing new merchandise shipments.
  • Maintain a clean, safe, and organized department, ensuring aisles, displays, and service counters are presentable and free of hazards.
  • Collaborate effectively with team members and department leads to achieve collective sales goals and overall store objectives.
  • Perform basic rod and reel maintenance and minor repairs as a value-added service for customers.
  • Support e-commerce operations by assisting with picking, packing, and fulfilling online "buy online, pick up in-store" orders for fishing gear.
  • Ensure all merchandise is accurately priced and signed according to company standards and current promotional calendars.
  • Uphold all company policies and procedures, with a strong emphasis on loss prevention and operational safety protocols.
  • Actively participate in vendor training sessions and utilize company resources to maintain a deep and current product knowledge base.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Extensive knowledge of freshwater and/or saltwater fishing techniques, species, and appropriate equipment (e.g., fly fishing, baitcasting, spinning, offshore trolling).
  • Proficiency in operating Point of Sale (POS) systems, inventory scanners, and other retail technology.
  • Demonstrable ability to perform technical tasks like spooling line, tying a variety of complex fishing knots, and performing basic rod and reel repair.
  • Solid understanding of inventory management and visual merchandising principles within a retail setting.
  • Familiarity with marine electronics, including the basic functions of GPS units and fish finders.

Soft Skills

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent.

Experience Requirements

Typical Experience Range:

  • 1-3 years of experience in a retail, sales, or customer-facing role.

Preferred:

  • Previous experience working in a sporting goods or outdoor specialty retail store, particularly within a fishing or tackle department. Verifiable personal experience and passion for fishing are highly valued.
