Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Proactively engage with every customer, building rapport and utilizing expert-level knowledge to identify their specific angling needs, goals, and experience level.
  • Provide detailed, consultative advice on a wide array of fishing equipment, including rods, reels, lines, lures, and terminal tackle, matching products to the customer's target species and fishing style.
  • Master the art of outfitting for specialized disciplines, particularly fly fishing, demonstrating a comprehensive understanding of rods, reels, fly lines, leaders, tippets, and fly selection.
  • Educate customers on local and regional fishing regulations, conservation ethics, and access points to ensure they have a safe, legal, and successful trip.
  • Drive departmental sales by leveraging product knowledge, suggestive selling techniques, and building long-term customer relationships that foster loyalty and repeat business.
  • Perform essential technical services for customers, including spooling new line on reels, building custom leader setups, and offering guidance on basic equipment maintenance and repair.
  • Maintain a visually compelling and impeccably stocked sales floor by executing merchandising strategies, setting up promotional displays, and ensuring all products are accurately priced and signed.
  • Actively participate in inventory control processes, such as receiving and stocking new merchandise, performing cycle counts, and communicating stock discrepancies to department leadership.
  • Continuously research and stay current with the latest fishing industry trends, new product technologies, and competitor offerings to maintain your status as a credible subject matter expert.
  • Process customer transactions accurately and efficiently using the point-of-sale (POS) system, including sales, returns, special orders, and exchanges, while adhering to all company policies.
  • Promote and sell value-added services such as guided fishing trips, fishing licenses, and in-store educational classes, workshops, or casting clinics.
  • Act as the voice of the customer by actively listening to feedback, product requests, and field reports, and sharing these valuable insights with management and buying teams.
  • Ensure the fishing department is consistently clean, organized, and safe for both customers and team members, upholding the highest standards of presentation.
  • Resolve customer service issues and product complaints with patience, empathy, and professionalism, aiming for a positive resolution and escalating to a manager when necessary.
  • Collaborate effectively with outfitters in other departments (e.g., apparel, camping, marine) to provide a seamless, holistic shopping experience for customers.
  • Participate in, and on occasion, lead in-store seminars, product demonstrations, and community outreach events to promote the fishing lifestyle and the store.
  • Consistently meet and exceed individual sales goals and contribute positively to the overall financial performance of the fishing department and the store.
  • Process special orders for non-stock items, managing the entire process from order entry to customer communication and final pickup.
  • Uphold all company policies and operational procedures, with a strong focus on loss prevention, safety, and asset protection.
  • Demonstrate and clearly articulate the technical features and benefits of high-performance fishing apparel, waders, and footwear, ensuring a proper fit for optimal performance and comfort.

Secondary Functions

  • Provide customer and field-level feedback to inform the organization's merchandising and buying strategy.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Expert-Level Product Knowledge: Deep and broad understanding of fishing gear, including rods, reels, lines, lures, and tackle across various disciplines (e.g., fly, spin, saltwater, freshwater).
  • Specialized Angling Expertise: Proven knowledge in at least one specific niche, such as fly fishing, bass fishing, inshore saltwater, or big game fishing.
  • POS System Proficiency: Experience operating point-of-sale systems for processing sales, returns, and inventory lookups.
  • Technical Rigging Skills: Ability to professionally spool spinning and casting reels, tie a variety of complex fishing knots, and rig leaders.

Experience Requirements

Typical Experience Range: 1-3+ years in a customer-facing role, preferably in retail or the outdoor industry.

Preferred: A demonstrated, lifelong passion for fishing is paramount and often valued more than direct retail experience. Previous experience as a fishing guide, commercial fisherman, or tournament angler is a significant advantage. Extensive personal experience and a verifiable high level of expertise in multiple angling disciplines will be heavily weighted.
