Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Design and lead high-energy, safe, and effective group fitness classes for participants of all levels, ensuring a challenging yet accessible workout experience.
  • Develop and choreograph progressive and varied workout programs tailored to specific class formats, such as HIIT, strength training, cycling, dance, or mind-body.
  • Cultivate a positive, supportive, and motivating class environment that encourages member participation, fosters a sense of community, and drives member retention.
  • Demonstrate all exercises with proper form and technique, clearly articulating instructions and the physiological benefits of each movement.
  • Offer multiple modifications and progressions for exercises to accommodate participants with different fitness levels, physical limitations, and injuries.
  • Provide personalized feedback and hands-on corrections to members during class to ensure safety, proper form, and optimal results.
  • Curate and prepare appropriate, high-energy music playlists that enhance the class atmosphere and match the tempo and style of the workout.
  • Maintain a vigilant focus on member safety at all times, prepared to respond to any injuries or emergencies with current CPR/AED and First Aid certifications.
  • Build strong, professional relationships with members by learning their names, understanding their goals, and providing consistent encouragement.
  • Act as a brand ambassador by promoting gym memberships, personal training packages, workshops, and special fitness events to current and prospective members.
  • Conduct fitness assessments and orientations for new members, helping them set realistic goals and recommending appropriate classes or training programs.
  • Ensure all fitness equipment is properly set up before class and sanitized and stored correctly afterward, promptly reporting any maintenance needs or safety hazards.
    -g Accurately track class attendance, participation numbers, and member feedback using the facility's designated software or tracking system.
  • Continuously expand personal knowledge of exercise science, fitness industry trends, and nutritional information to provide the most current and effective instruction.
  • Educate members on and consistently enforce all gym policies and safety regulations to ensure a secure, clean, and orderly environment for everyone.
  • Address and resolve member questions, concerns, or complaints in a professional and timely manner, escalating to management when necessary.
  • Participate actively in regular team meetings, educational workshops, and continuing education sessions to enhance instructional skills and stay aligned with company standards.
  • Assist in maintaining the cleanliness, organization, and presentation of the group fitness studio, workout areas, and associated equipment.
  • Develop and instruct engaging virtual fitness classes for online platforms, effectively adapting coaching style and energy for a remote audience.
  • Organize, promote, and lead fitness challenges, workshops, or community-building events to foster member engagement and camaraderie outside of regular classes.

Secondary Functions

  • Assist management with tracking class attendance data and member feedback to identify trends and areas for program improvement.
  • Contribute to the studio's programming strategy by providing insights on popular class times, formats, and member preferences.
  • Collaborate with the sales and marketing teams to promote fitness programs and contribute to membership growth initiatives through social media or in-club events.
  • Participate in regular staff meetings and planning sessions to help develop new class schedules and brainstorm special fitness events.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Nationally Recognized Group Fitness Certification (e.g., AFAA, ACE, NASM)
  • Valid CPR/AED and First Aid Certification
  • In-depth Knowledge of Human Anatomy, Kinesiology, and Exercise Physiology
  • Specialty Certifications (e.g., Spinning®, Zumba®, Les Millsâ„¢, Yoga Alliance, Pilates)
  • Proficiency in Exercise Programming, Class Design, and Musical Phrasing
  • Experience with various types of fitness equipment and their proper use.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Accredited Group Fitness Instructor Certification

Preferred Education:

  • Associate's or Bachelor's Degree

Relevant Fields of Study:

  • Kinesiology or Exercise Science
  • Physical Education
  • Sports Medicine or Athletic Training

Experience Requirements

Typical Experience Range: 1-3 years of proven experience leading dynamic group fitness classes in a gym, studio, or similar environment.

Preferred: 3+ years of experience with a verifiable track record of building and retaining a loyal class following and proficiency in multiple class formats.
