Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Supervise, mentor, and lead a diverse team of personal trainers and fitness floor staff, providing regular performance feedback, coaching, and professional development.
  • Manage the daily operations of the fitness floor, ensuring a safe, clean, orderly, and welcoming environment for all members and guests.
  • Drive the success of the personal training department by overseeing sales goals, tracking key performance indicators (KPIs), and implementing strategies to boost revenue and client retention.
  • Develop and manage the group fitness and personal training schedules to ensure optimal coverage, variety, and alignment with member demand and club goals.
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for member feedback, questions, and concerns related to the fitness department, resolving issues promptly and professionally to ensure high satisfaction.
  • Conduct regular fitness equipment inspections, coordinate preventative maintenance and timely repairs, and provide recommendations for new equipment purchases to keep the facility state-of-the-art.
  • Lead the recruitment, hiring, and comprehensive onboarding process for new fitness team members, ensuring they align with our brand, culture, and high service standards.
  • Ensure all fitness staff maintain current, valid certifications (e.g., NCCA-accredited Personal Training, CPR/AED) and adhere to all industry best practices and safety protocols.
  • Act as a Manager on Duty as required, overseeing all club operations, responding to facility or member emergencies, and making authoritative decisions.
  • Lead regular team meetings to communicate company updates, provide ongoing education, review performance metrics, and foster a collaborative and motivated team culture.
  • Develop and implement innovative fitness programs, member challenges, and educational workshops to enhance member engagement, motivation, and retention.
  • Perform fitness consultations and assessments for new and existing members to help guide them toward appropriate training services, classes, and wellness programs.
  • Uphold and consistently enforce all club policies and procedures, with a strong focus on risk management, safety protocols, and emergency response.
  • Manage staff schedules, review and approve timecards, and ensure appropriate floor coverage during all hours of operation to maintain service excellence.
  • Personally maintain a small client base or teach a limited number of classes to stay connected with the member experience, lead by example, and maintain practical skills.

Secondary Functions

  • Collaborate with the sales and marketing teams to create and execute promotions for personal training packages, special events, and membership drives.
  • Monitor and analyze member participation data and satisfaction feedback to make data-driven decisions for program improvements and schedule adjustments.
  • Manage the inventory of fitness accessories, towels, and cleaning supplies, placing orders as needed while adhering to departmental budget constraints.
  • Generate and present regular reports to the Fitness Manager or General Manager on department performance, including revenue, member engagement, and staff productivity.
  • Stay current with emerging fitness industry trends, new exercise modalities, and competitor offerings to ensure our services remain competitive and innovative.
  • Assist in developing and maintaining strong, positive relationships with members to foster a powerful sense of community and long-term loyalty.
  • Contribute to the organization's overall member experience strategy by providing insights from the fitness floor.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Nationally Recognized Personal Training Certification: Must hold a current certification from an NCCA-accredited organization (e.g., NASM, ACE, ACSM, NSCA).
  • CPR/AED and First Aid Certification: Current and valid certification is mandatory.
  • Gym Management Software: Proficiency with club management and scheduling software (e.g., Mindbody, ABC Fitness, ClubReady).
  • Fitness Assessment & Programming: Deep knowledge of conducting fitness assessments, health screenings, and designing safe and effective exercise programs.
  • Equipment Expertise: Strong working knowledge of the proper use, maintenance, and safety protocols for a wide range of fitness equipment.
  • Sales & Business Acumen: Understanding of sales principles, KPI tracking, and basic budget management within a fitness context.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • Sports Management or Administration

Experience Requirements

Typical Experience Range: 3-5 years of progressive experience within the fitness industry.

Preferred: A minimum of 1-2 years of experience in a supervisory, team lead, or management role within a gym, health club, or studio setting is highly preferred.
