Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

Safely operate a Class A tractor-trailer combination (flatbed) for extended periods over long distances, including inter-state travel, often involving irregular routes and schedules.
Expertly perform cargo securement using chains, binders, straps, and tarps to ensure freight is immobilized and protected from the elements, in full compliance with FMCSA and DOT regulations.
Conduct comprehensive pre-trip, in-route, and post-trip inspections of the truck, trailer, and associated equipment to identify and report any maintenance or safety issues.
Meticulously maintain accurate and up-to-date electronic logs (ELDs) of driving hours, duty status, mileage, and fuel consumption to ensure strict adherence to Hours of Service (HOS) regulations.
Oversee and verify the proper loading and unloading of freight, ensuring correct weight distribution and balance to maintain vehicle stability and legal compliance.
Navigate effectively using maps, GPS, and route planning software to optimize travel time, conserve fuel, and ensure on-time delivery to various customer sites, including construction zones and industrial facilities.
Maintain constant and professional communication with dispatch, logistics coordinators, and customers, providing timely updates on ETAs, delays, and delivery status.
Manage all required shipping documentation, including Bills of Lading (BOL), proof of delivery receipts, permits, and other essential paperwork, ensuring accuracy and proper submission.
Adhere to all company safety protocols, traffic laws, and transportation regulations to maintain a superior safety record and prevent accidents, injuries, or property damage.
Proactively identify and assess potential hazards at shipping/receiving locations and on the road, making decisive actions to mitigate risks.
Maneuver the commercial vehicle in tight spaces, challenging terrain, and congested urban environments with a high degree of skill and spatial awareness.
Represent the company with a professional and courteous demeanor during all interactions with customers, shippers, receivers, and the general public.

Secondary Functions

Perform minor preventative maintenance on the vehicle, such as checking and topping off fluid levels, inspecting tire pressure, and cleaning the vehicle's interior and exterior.
Assist in yard operations as needed, which may include repositioning trailers, organizing equipment, or assisting with general warehouse duties.
Report all accidents, traffic violations, vehicle defects, or property damage immediately and accurately to the safety department and direct supervisor.
Provide valuable feedback to the operations team on customer locations, route efficiency, and potential areas for operational improvement.
Participate in ongoing safety training, compliance meetings, and professional development programs to stay current with industry best practices and regulations.
Occasionally guide or mentor less experienced drivers in proper securement techniques and company procedures.
Handle and protect high-value, oversized, or specialized loads that may require specific handling instructions, permits, or escort vehicles.
Troubleshoot minor mechanical issues on the road to minimize downtime and coordinate with maintenance teams for more significant repairs.
Ensure all personal protective equipment (PPE) is properly maintained and utilized at all times when outside of the cab at a customer or company facility.
Manage on-road expenses and submit receipts for reimbursement in a timely and organized manner, following company expense policies.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

Valid Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL-A): A current and valid license with a clean or acceptable driving record (MVR) is mandatory.
Flatbed Cargo Securement: Demonstrated expertise in using straps, chains, binders, and tarps to secure diverse and often irregular loads.
Knowledge of DOT Regulations: Deep understanding of Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) rules, including Hours of Service (HOS) and cargo securement standards.

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

Experience Requirements

Typical Experience Range: 1-2 years of verifiable OTR (Over-the-Road) or Regional Class A driving experience.

Preferred: 2+ years of dedicated flatbed driving experience, with a proven track record of handling a variety of loads (e.g., steel, lumber, machinery, building materials). Experience with oversized loads is a significant plus.
