Core Responsibilities
Primary Functions
- Safely operate company-owned commercial motor vehicles, such as tractor-trailers, box trucks, or straight trucks, to transport and deliver goods to designated locations.
- Conduct thorough pre-trip and post-trip inspections on the assigned vehicle and its equipment, meticulously documenting findings and reporting any defects or maintenance needs.
- Ensure all cargo is properly loaded, secured, braced, and balanced within the vehicle to prevent shifting or damage, adhering to all safety and load-securing regulations.
- Maintain strict adherence to all Department of Transportation (DOT), state, and local traffic laws, as well as federal motor carrier safety regulations at all times.
- Maintain accurate and up-to-date electronic logs of driving hours, duty status, mileage, and fuel consumption using an Electronic Logging Device (ELD) system.
- Manage and complete all required shipping documentation, including bills of lading, delivery receipts, manifests, and trip reports, ensuring 100% accuracy and legibility.
- Provide exceptional customer service during interactions at pickup and delivery points, acting as a professional and courteous representative of the company.
- Communicate effectively and proactively with dispatch, fleet managers, and customers regarding route status, potential delays, and estimated times of arrival (ETAs).
- Navigate routes efficiently using GPS technology, maps, and routing software, making intelligent adjustments for traffic, weather conditions, and construction zones.
- Perform routine vehicle upkeep tasks, including checking fluid levels (oil, coolant), tire pressure, and lights to ensure the vehicle remains in a safe and roadworthy condition.
- Immediately report any accidents, incidents, traffic violations, or vehicle damage to the fleet manager in accordance with established company policy and procedures.
- Maintain the cleanliness and professional appearance of the assigned vehicle, both interior and exterior, to uphold company standards.
- Handle freight and materials which may involve operating equipment like pallet jacks, hand trucks, or (if certified) forklifts during loading and unloading processes.
- Comply with all company safety protocols, policies, and procedures, and actively participate in ongoing safety training sessions and meetings.
- Monitor vehicle performance and systems, promptly reporting any mechanical issues, strange noises, or potential problems to the maintenance department for preventative action.
- Strategically plan routes and manage schedules to meet strict delivery deadlines while optimizing for fuel efficiency and time management.
- Verify the contents and quantity of each shipment against the corresponding shipping documents to ensure accuracy before departing from a facility.
- Handle payment collection or signature verification upon delivery when required by the transaction terms, ensuring all paperwork is correctly processed.
- Adhere to specific customer requirements for delivery windows, unloading procedures, site access protocols, and any special handling instructions.
- Maintain a professional demeanor and appearance at all times, including wearing the company uniform and appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE).
- Manage company resources responsibly, including fuel cards, toll passes, and communication devices, keeping accurate records of all expenditures.
- Undergo and pass periodic and random drug and alcohol screenings as mandated by federal regulations and comprehensive company safety policy.
Secondary Functions
- Assist in warehouse operations, including organizing freight and preparing shipments, during downtime or as needed.
- Provide mentorship and on-the-job guidance to newly hired drivers or driver trainees.
- Participate in route analysis and provide feedback to dispatch for improving efficiency and safety.
- Maintain and submit accurate expense reports for fuel, tolls, and other on-the-road expenditures.
Required Skills & Competencies
Hard Skills (Technical)
- Valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL), Class A or B, with a clean driving record.
- Proficiency in operating various types of commercial vehicles (e.g., tractor-trailers, straight trucks, tankers).
- In-depth knowledge of DOT regulations and Federal Motor Carrier Safety Standards.
- Proven experience with Electronic Logging Devices (ELDs) and fleet management software.
