Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Perform comprehensive external and internal pre-flight inspections of the aircraft, verifying the operational status and airworthiness of all mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic systems.
  • Calculate and verify aircraft weight and balance, takeoff/landing performance data, and fuel requirements for each flight, ensuring compliance with all safety and performance limitations.
  • Continuously monitor all critical aircraft systems in-flight, including engines, fuel, hydraulics, pneumatics, electrical, and environmental controls, through detailed analysis of cockpit instrumentation.
  • Meticulously manage the aircraft's fuel system, executing fuel transfers and cross-feeding procedures as required to maintain proper center of gravity and ensure adequate fuel reserves.
  • Operate and configure aircraft systems during all phases of flight—ground operations, takeoff, climb, cruise, descent, and landing—in close coordination with the flight crew.
  • Serve as the primary crew member for identifying, diagnosing, and troubleshooting system malfunctions in real-time, executing appropriate checklists and corrective actions to ensure flight safety.
  • Execute non-normal and emergency procedures with precision and composure, providing critical systems knowledge and support to the pilots during high-stress situations.
  • Maintain detailed and accurate flight logs, maintenance discrepancy reports, and other aircraft records in accordance with company policies and federal aviation regulations.
  • Act as the primary technical liaison between the flight crew and ground maintenance personnel, providing detailed post-flight briefings on aircraft system status and required maintenance actions.
  • Conduct thorough post-flight walk-around inspections and secure the aircraft systems, meticulously documenting any issues encountered for resolution before the next flight.
  • Maintain an expert-level, in-depth knowledge of the specific aircraft's systems, limitations, and operational procedures through continuous study and recurrent training.
  • Actively participate in all crew briefings and debriefings, contributing systems-related expertise to flight planning, threat assessment, and mission review processes.
  • Apply Crew Resource Management (CRM) principles to foster a culture of open communication, effective teamwork, and collaborative decision-making within the flight deck.
  • Compute and apply cruise control data to optimize aircraft performance, fuel efficiency, and range based on real-time atmospheric conditions and flight level changes.
  • Direct and supervise aircraft loading, fueling, and ground servicing operations as needed, ensuring all tasks are performed safely and in accordance with established procedures.
  • Maintain full currency and proficiency on assigned aircraft types, successfully completing all required simulator sessions, line checks, and proficiency evaluations.
  • Interpret and apply complex performance data from charts, manuals, and onboard computers to ensure operations remain well within all certified aircraft limitations.
  • Proactively identify potential safety hazards or operational inefficiencies related to aircraft systems and recommend procedural or technical improvements to management.

  • Contribute to the organization's data strategy and roadmap by providing operational insights on system health monitoring.
  • Collaborate with business units to translate data needs into engineering requirements, particularly for flight data monitoring programs.
  • Participate in sprint planning and agile ceremonies within the data engineering team if assigned to special projects or flight test programs.
  • Assist in the development and refinement of training materials and simulator scenarios for new and current flight engineers.
  • Provide systems-related training and mentorship to less experienced flight crew members or flight engineers in training.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • FAA Flight Engineer Certificate with Turbojet and/or Turboprop rating.
  • Type Rating in a specific heavy, multi-engine aircraft (e.g., B747, B767, DC-10, C-130, P-3).
  • FAA Second Class Medical Certificate (or higher).
  • In-depth knowledge of complex aircraft systems, including powerplants, hydraulics, pneumatics, electrical systems, and fuel management.
  • Proficiency in calculating aircraft performance, weight & balance, and fuel planning.
  • Possession of an FAA Airframe & Powerplant (A&P) License is highly desirable.
  • Ability to interpret technical manuals, wiring diagrams, and system schematics.

Educational Background

Experience Requirements

Typical Experience Range: 3-10+ years of relevant aviation experience.

Preferred:

  • 1,000+ hours as a Flight Engineer on a heavy multi-engine jet aircraft.
  • Extensive international, long-haul, or cargo flight operations experience.
  • Prior military experience as a Flight Engineer on a comparable aircraft type.
