Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Perform comprehensive floor care duties, including sweeping, mopping, scrubbing, and vacuuming on various surfaces to remove dirt, debris, and scuff marks.
  • Operate and maintain specialized floor cleaning equipment, including automatic scrubbers, high-speed burnishers, carpet extractors, and wet/dry vacuums.
  • Execute deep cleaning and restoration projects, including stripping, sealing, waxing, and finishing hard surface floors to restore their appearance and durability.
  • Perform professional carpet and upholstery care, including spot cleaning, shampooing, and hot water extraction.
  • Identify and select appropriate cleaning solutions, chemicals, and equipment for specific floor types and cleaning tasks, ensuring safe and effective application.
  • Adhere strictly to all safety protocols and procedures, including the use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and proper handling/storage of cleaning chemicals.
  • Conduct regular inspections of floor surfaces to identify areas needing attention, such as spills, stains, or damage, and address them promptly.
  • Set up and use safety signage (e.g., "Wet Floor" signs) to prevent accidents in high-traffic areas during cleaning operations.
  • Move and rearrange furniture, equipment, and other obstacles as necessary to access and clean entire floor areas thoroughly.
  • Maintain a detailed log of cleaning and maintenance activities, reporting any equipment malfunctions or supply needs to the supervisor.
  • Ensure all floor care equipment is cleaned, properly stored, and in good working order after each use, performing minor maintenance as needed.
  • Assist in maintaining inventory of cleaning supplies and chemicals, notifying management when stock levels are low.
  • Respond to emergency cleaning calls, such as spills and floods, in a timely and efficient manner to mitigate hazards and damage.
  • Polish and burnish floors to maintain a high-gloss, professional appearance in line with facility standards.

Secondary Functions

  • Assist the general custodial team with other cleaning duties, such as dusting, cleaning restrooms, and emptying trash receptacles, as needed.
  • Support facility setup and breakdown for special events, ensuring floors are clean and presentable before and after.
  • Report any observed maintenance issues or property damage, such as broken tiles or peeling wax, to the maintenance department for repair.
  • Participate in ongoing training sessions on new cleaning techniques, safety procedures, and equipment operation.
  • Collaborate with other facilities team members to complete large-scale cleaning projects and ensure a cohesive approach to building maintenance.
  • Provide excellent customer service by professionally and courteously interacting with staff, clients, and visitors.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Proficiency in operating industrial floor care equipment such as auto-scrubbers, burnishers, and carpet extractors.
  • Knowledge of floor stripping, waxing, sealing, and finishing techniques for various hard surfaces (VCT, terrazzo, concrete, etc.).
  • Understanding of different cleaning chemicals, their proper dilutions, and safe application methods.
  • Experience with different carpet cleaning methods, including bonnet cleaning and hot water extraction.
  • Ability to perform minor preventative maintenance on cleaning equipment.
  • Knowledge of OSHA safety regulations and the use of Safety Data Sheets (SDS).

Soft Skills

  • Strong attention to detail to ensure a high standard of cleanliness and appearance.
  • Excellent time management and ability to complete tasks efficiently without direct supervision.
  • Physical stamina and the ability to stand, walk, bend, and lift objects (up to 50 lbs) for extended periods.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent.

Preferred Education:

  • Vocational training or certification in custodial services or floor care techniques.

Experience Requirements

Typical Experience Range: 1-3 years of experience in a custodial, janitorial, or environmental services role.

Preferred: 2+ years of direct experience specifically focused on commercial floor care, including stripping, waxing, and operating heavy-duty floor machinery. Experience in a hospital, school, or large commercial office setting is a plus.
