Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

Accurately measure rooms and job sites, calculate material needs and waste factors, and prepare written material and time estimates to ensure projects are completed on schedule and within budget.
Prepare and inspect subfloors for defects, moisture, levelness and structural soundness; perform sanding, patching, screeding, leveling, and priming to create a suitable substrate for installation.
Remove existing flooring materials and adhesives safely and efficiently, dispose of debris according to regulations, and restore the area for new installation with minimal disruption to occupants.
Install hardwood flooring (nail-down, glue-down and floating systems), ensuring proper acclimation, expansion gaps, board sequencing, and finishing are applied for long-lasting performance.
Lay and seam carpet, trim and tuck edges, stretch and secure carpet with power stretchers, and install threshold strips, transition pieces, and tack strips to produce a clean, safe finish.
Install resilient flooring (sheet vinyl, luxury vinyl tile [LVT], vinyl composite tile [VCT]) using manufacturer-recommended adhesives and seam-welding techniques to ensure watertight, smooth surfaces.
Tile floors with ceramic, porcelain or natural stone, including dry layout, cutting with wet saws and tile cutters, setting in mortar, grouting, sealing, and final clean-up to meet industry standards.
Install laminate and engineered flooring, following manufacturer guidelines for underlayment, vapor barriers, expansion spacing and locking systems to prevent warping and squeaks.
Apply appropriate adhesives, primers, moisture barriers and sealants; understand chemical characteristics and handling requirements for each flooring type and environment.
Read and interpret blueprints, specifications, shop drawings and submittals to align installation plans with architectural intent and code requirements.
Cut, scribe and fit flooring materials around obstacles (door frames, cabinetry, pipes, staircases) with accurate templates and jigs to achieve precise, aesthetically-pleasing results.
Install baseboards, shoe molding, stair nosing, reducers and other finishing trims; ensure seams align and fasteners are concealed for a professional finish.
Conduct moisture and temperature testing on concrete and wooden substrates using moisture meters and relative humidity tests; recommend and install mitigation systems or vapor retarders when required.
Coordinate with general contractors, electricians, plumbers and other trades to schedule installation steps, adjust to on-site changes, and ensure safe and efficient workflow.
Maintain accurate job site documentation including daily logs, time sheets, material usage reports, change orders and client sign-offs to support project financials and warranty claims.
Inspect completed work with supervisors or clients, document punch lists, and perform timely repairs or touch-ups to meet quality assurance standards.
Operate and maintain hand and power tools safely (floor sanders, nailers, staplers, saws, heat welders, routers), perform routine maintenance, and ensure tool calibration where applicable.
Enforce and practice strict safety procedures including PPE use, fall protection, proper lifting techniques and hazardous material handling to reduce job-site incidents.
Source, order and manage flooring inventory, track materials from delivery to installation, and minimize waste and theft while optimizing cost-efficiency.
Provide on-site customer service: explain installation process, care instructions, maintenance tips and warranty terms clearly and professionally to homeowners and facility managers.
Troubleshoot installation and product performance issues, diagnose causes (moisture, improper substrate, adhesive failure), and implement corrective actions such as moisture mitigation, re-leveling or replacement.
Train and mentor apprentices and junior installers, assign daily tasks, monitor performance, and provide coaching on techniques, safety and quality standards.

Secondary Functions
