Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Tie a high volume of flies efficiently and consistently, meeting or exceeding daily and weekly production quotas for a diverse catalog of patterns.
  • Expertly replicate a wide variety of established fly patterns—including dry flies, nymphs, streamers, emergers, and saltwater flies—with exacting precision.
  • Maintain rigorous quality control standards on every fly produced, ensuring perfect proportions, robust durability, and visual consistency with master samples.
  • Interpret complex pattern recipes, material lists, and visual guides to produce flies that are identical batch after batch.
  • Master and apply a broad spectrum of tying techniques, such as creating dubbing loops, spinning deer hair, palmering hackle, and applying UV resins.
  • Manage and maintain an organized tying station, including a personal inventory of hooks, beads, threads, wires, and other essential materials.
  • Select the highest quality materials for each pattern, considering color, size, texture, and movement to create the most effective fly possible.
  • meticulously inspect finished flies for any defects, such as loose thread wraps, crowded hook eyes, or improper material placement, and perform corrections.
  • Handle delicate and expensive materials like premium genetic hackle, jungle cock, and exotic furs with exceptional care to minimize waste and maximize yield.
  • Work with a full range of hook sizes, from tiny size 24 midge patterns to large 6/0 big game hooks, demonstrating advanced dexterity.
  • Accurately track personal production numbers, materials consumed, and time spent on specific patterns for inventory and costing analysis.
  • Stay current with the latest fly tying trends, innovative techniques, and new materials being introduced to the fly fishing community.
  • Collaborate closely with the product design team to prototype, test, and provide critical feedback on new and experimental fly patterns.

Secondary Functions

  • Assist in the receiving, sorting, and inventory management of bulk tying materials, ensuring quality and proper storage.
  • Provide expert fly tying demonstrations for marketing content, trade shows, social media, or in-store customer events.
  • Contribute to the creation of step-by-step tying instructions or video tutorials for new or featured fly patterns.
  • Participate in team meetings to discuss production schedules, quality control challenges, process improvements, and new product launches.
  • Support the custom fly program by working with pro-staff or clients to develop and produce unique, specialized patterns for specific fisheries or trips.
  • Offer technical insights to the purchasing team regarding material quality, usability, and potential new suppliers.
  • Maintain and perform minor repairs on personal and company-provided tying tools, including vises, bobbins, and whip finishers.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Deep, demonstrable proficiency in a wide range of advanced fly tying techniques (e.g., parachute posts, extended bodies, composite loops, stacking hair).
  • encyclopedic knowledge of fly tying materials, both natural (feathers, fur, hair) and synthetic, and their applications.
  • Strong understanding of aquatic and terrestrial entomology and baitfish profiles as they relate to fly pattern design and imitation.
  • Proven ability to read, understand, and perfectly execute complex and nuanced fly pattern recipes.
  • Mastery of all standard fly tying tools, including rotary vises, ceramic bobbins, hair stackers, and whip finishers.
  • Experience applying various adhesives, epoxies, and modern UV-cure resins to enhance durability and appearance.
  • Ability to quickly learn new patterns and adapt tying style to meet specific production standards.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent. A passion for the craft and demonstrable skill outweigh formal education.

Relevant Fields of Study:

  • Aquatic Biology
  • Entomology

Experience Requirements

Typical Experience Range:

  • 3-5+ years of dedicated fly tying experience with a comprehensive and high-quality portfolio.

Preferred:

  • A demonstrable, physical or digital portfolio of tied flies showcasing a wide variety of patterns and superior tying techniques.
  • Prior experience in a commercial or production fly tying environment is highly advantageous.
  • Experience tying for a specific region (e.g., Rocky Mountain trout, East Coast stripers, tropical flats) is a plus.
