Core Responsibilities
Primary Functions
- Set up, adjust, and operate a variety of folding machines to process printed materials according to job specifications.
- Read and interpret job tickets and work orders to determine folding requirements, including size, fold type, and quantity.
- Perform continuous quality control checks throughout the production run to ensure folding accuracy, registration, and overall quality.
- Monitor machine performance, making fine-tune adjustments to rollers, guides, and suction to prevent marking, creasing, or jams.
- Troubleshoot and resolve mechanical issues, stoppages, and paper jams in a timely manner to minimize downtime.
- Load paper stock onto the machine feeder and unload finished, folded product, stacking it neatly on pallets or in cartons.
- Set up and operate in-line gluing, perforating, and scoring attachments as required by the job.
- Accurately configure and execute complex fold patterns, such as gate folds, accordion folds, and right-angle folds.
- Conduct final inspections of the completed job to verify counts and ensure it meets or exceeds customer quality standards.
- Adjust machine speed to balance productivity with quality, based on the specific requirements of the paper stock and job complexity.
- Verify that the correct stock and materials are being used for each specific job order before starting the run.
- Box, label, and prepare finished products for the next stage of production or for shipping.
- Calibrate machine settings for different paper weights, sizes, and finishes to ensure optimal performance.
- Master the operation of specific folding equipment, such as Stahl, MBO, Heidelberg, or similar machinery.
Secondary Functions
- Perform routine and preventative maintenance on folding equipment, including cleaning, lubrication, and minor repairs.
- Maintain accurate production records, documenting job progress, material usage, spoilage, and operational downtime.
- Uphold a safe and organized work environment by adhering to all company safety protocols and housekeeping standards.
- Collaborate with pressroom and other bindery staff to ensure a smooth and efficient workflow from start to finish.
- Communicate effectively with supervisors regarding production status, equipment issues, or quality concerns.
- Assist in training new or less-experienced operators on machine setup and standard operating procedures.
- Manage and maintain an inventory of necessary operational supplies, such as glue, lubricants, and cleaning solutions.
- Support ad-hoc data requests and exploratory data analysis.
- Contribute to the organization's data strategy and roadmap.
- Collaborate with business units to translate data needs into engineering requirements.
- Participate in sprint planning and agile ceremonies within the data engineering team.
Required Skills & Competencies
Hard Skills (Technical)
- Deep proficiency in operating and setting up folding machines (e.g., MBO, Stahl, Baumfolder, Heidelberg).
- Strong mechanical aptitude for troubleshooting, diagnosing, and resolving equipment malfunctions.
- Ability to read and use a ruler and other measurement tools with precision.
- Knowledge of bindery and print finishing processes.
- Basic mathematical skills for counting, calculation, and verification.
- Experience with quality control procedures and standards in a printing environment.
- Ability to interpret and follow detailed instructions from job dockets and specification sheets.

Educational Background
Minimum Education:

Experience Requirements
Typical Experience Range:
- 2-5+ years of direct experience as a Folder Operator in a commercial print, direct mail, or packaging environment.
Preferred:
- 5+ years of experience with a proven track record of operating complex, multi-unit folding equipment. Extensive experience with specific machinery like advanced Stahl or MBO folders is highly desirable.
