Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Continuously and accurately load paper stock, signatures, and other materials into the feeder of high-speed folding machines (such as MBO, Stahl, or Heidelberg) to ensure uninterrupted production runs.
  • Assist the Lead Folding Operator with the setup, calibration, and changeover of folding machines according to detailed job ticket specifications.
  • Diligently monitor machine operation to detect potential issues, such as paper jams, misfeeds, or doubles, and take immediate corrective action to minimize downtime.
  • Perform meticulous and frequent quality control inspections on folded materials, checking for accuracy of folds, registration, pagination, and any cosmetic defects to meet client standards.
  • Carefully remove, jog, and stack finished, folded products from the machine's delivery end, preparing them for the next stage in the production process.
  • Accurately count, bundle, and package folded signatures or finished pieces, ensuring proper labeling and skid packing for transport to other departments or shipping.
  • Read and interpret job orders and production schedules to understand project requirements, including fold types, paper stock, quantity, and quality expectations.
  • Maintain a constant and open line of communication with the Lead Operator regarding production speed, quality status, and any machine malfunctions.
  • Operate material handling equipment, such as pallet jacks and lifts, to safely move raw stock and finished products throughout the bindery department.
  • Learn to make minor adjustments to machine components, including rollers, guides, and belts, under the guidance of the Lead Operator to maintain optimal performance.
  • Proactively keep the work area around the folding machine clean, organized, and free of hazards to ensure a safe and efficient operating environment.
  • Adhere strictly to all company safety policies and procedures, including machine guarding, lockout/tagout protocols, and the use of personal protective equipment (PPE).

Secondary Functions

  • Assist in performing routine preventative maintenance, including cleaning rollers, emptying waste receptacles, lubricating moving parts, and reporting complex issues to the maintenance team.
  • Maintain accurate production logs and complete all required job ticket paperwork, meticulously documenting quantities, job progress, and any material waste.
  • Manage the supply and inventory of materials needed for the folding area, such as cartons, strapping, slip sheets, and labels, notifying supervisors of low stock levels.
  • Support other bindery and finishing departments, such as cutting or stitching, during periods of high demand or as production needs dictate.
  • Actively participate in team meetings and contribute to a culture of continuous improvement by suggesting process enhancements for safety, quality, and efficiency.
  • Cross-train on other bindery equipment to increase your skill set and provide greater flexibility to the production team.
  • Ensure all finished work is correctly staged and identified for the next production process, minimizing errors and delays downstream.
  • Collaborate effectively with team members, supervisors, and quality assurance personnel to resolve production challenges and meet tight deadlines.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Mechanical Aptitude: A natural ability to understand how machinery works and a willingness to perform hands-on adjustments and basic maintenance.
  • Quality Control Inspection: The ability to spot defects, inconsistencies, and variations in printed and folded materials.
  • Basic Mathematics & Measurement: Proficiency in counting, addition, subtraction, and using a ruler to verify dimensions and specifications.
  • Machine Operation Familiarity: Previous experience in a manufacturing or production setting operating any type of machinery is a strong asset.
  • Material Handling: Experience safely operating manual pallet jacks or other equipment to move heavy loads.
  • Understanding of Production Workflow: A general comprehension of how individual tasks fit into a larger manufacturing or printing process.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • High School Diploma or GED Equivalent.

Preferred Education:

  • Vocational or Technical School Certificate in Print Technology, Graphic Communications, or a related manufacturing field.

Relevant Fields of Study:

  • Manufacturing Technology

Experience Requirements

Typical Experience Range:

  • 0-2 years of experience in a manufacturing, production, or warehouse environment.

Preferred:

  • 1+ year of experience specifically within a commercial print shop, bindery, or mail house environment is highly desirable. Direct experience as a helper on a folder, cutter, or stitcher is a significant plus.
