Core Responsibilities
Primary Functions
- Safely operate a commercial vehicle (such as a straight truck or tractor-trailer) to transport and deliver a wide range of perishable and non-perishable food products to customer locations on a predetermined route.
- Physically unload and meticulously verify customer orders, using equipment like a two-wheel dolly or electric pallet jack, ensuring product integrity and temperature control are maintained from truck to storage.
- Place delivered products in customers' designated storage areas, which may include walk-in coolers, freezers, and dry stock rooms, while practicing proper product rotation (FIFO).
- Cultivate and maintain strong, positive relationships with customers by providing exceptional service, professionally addressing inquiries, and proactively resolving any service-related issues.
- Accurately process and collect payments from customers upon delivery, handling cash, checks, and credit card transactions in accordance with company policies.
- Reconcile all invoices, payments, and returns at the end of each route, ensuring all paperwork is complete, accurate, and submitted in a timely manner.
- Act as a sales consultant on your route, identifying opportunities for upselling, introducing new products, and communicating customer feedback and sales leads to the sales department.
- Maintain precise control of the inventory on your delivery truck, conducting regular stock counts and reconciling discrepancies to minimize shrinkage and ensure product availability.
- Perform thorough pre-trip and post-trip inspections of your vehicle, documenting any mechanical issues and ensuring compliance with all DOT regulations and company safety standards.
- Adhere strictly to all local, state, and federal transportation regulations, including hours-of-service (HOS) rules, to ensure safe and legal vehicle operation at all times.
- Utilize onboard technology, such as handheld scanners and routing software, to manage deliveries, track inventory, and communicate with dispatch and management.
- Navigate delivery routes efficiently using maps or GPS to meet scheduled delivery windows and adapt to unforeseen traffic, weather, or construction delays.
- Professionally manage product returns, credits, and damages, completing the necessary paperwork and returning products to the distribution center as required.
- Maintain the cleanliness and organization of the truck cab and cargo area to ensure a safe and professional working environment.
- Proactively communicate with dispatch and management regarding route status, delays, and any customer issues that may arise during the day.
- Provide training and mentorship to new drivers or route helpers, sharing best practices for safety, customer service, and operational efficiency.
