Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Operate, monitor, and adjust food processing and packaging machinery (mixers, fillers, slicers, ovens, retorts, conveyors, sealers) to meet production schedules, product specifications, and yield targets while maintaining safe operating practices.
  • Perform set-ups, changeovers, and calibration of production equipment according to standard operating procedures (SOPs) to ensure product consistency and minimize downtime.
  • Execute routine preventive maintenance tasks and basic mechanical/electrical troubleshooting (belts, sensors, motors, drives, bearings) and escalate complex issues to maintenance/engineering teams with clear diagnostic information.
  • Conduct in-process quality checks including weight checks, metal detection verification, temperature and pH measurements, moisture readings, visual inspections, and sensory checks; document results in production logs and quality records.
  • Follow Good Manufacturing Practices (GMPs), HACCP plans, allergen control procedures, and company-specific food safety programs (SQF/BRC/IFS) to maintain regulatory and customer compliance.
  • Conduct and document sanitation and Clean‑In‑Place (CIP) operations, including chemical handling, verification of cleaning effectiveness, and return-to-production checks following sanitation protocols.
  • Accurately weigh, measure, and batch ingredients according to recipes and formulations, record batch information, and reconcile raw material usage to inventory systems for traceability.
  • Execute product sampling and chain-of-custody documentation for laboratory testing (microbiology, moisture, pH, chemical) and coordinate with QA/Lab staff to address out-of-spec results.
  • Ensure all labels, lot codes, and packaging meet product specifications and customer requirements; perform label changes and verify traceability and expiration date accuracy.
  • Monitor and adjust process control parameters (temperature, pressure, vacuum, conveyor speed) and log process deviations, corrective actions, and preventative follow-ups.
  • Operate and validate in-line inspection systems such as metal detectors, X-ray units, checkweighers, and vision systems; perform routine tests and report faults to QA/maintenance.
  • Maintain accurate production and compliance documentation including batch records, yield reports, deviation logs, cleaning verification, and equipment checklists to support audits and traceability.
  • Enforce safety procedures including lockout/tagout (LOTO), PPE requirements, confined space awareness, and safe material handling to maintain a zero-harm workplace.
  • Participate in root cause analysis and corrective action implementation for production and quality incidents; drive follow-up to ensure recurrence prevention.
  • Support first-line troubleshooting for packaging defects, sealing failures, or product contamination events, isolating suspect product and initiating hold/quarantine procedures when necessary.
  • Train and mentor new operators on equipment operation, SOP adherence, safety practices, and quality expectations to build a capable and cross-trained team.
  • Optimize line efficiency by identifying bottlenecks, suggesting minor process improvements, and supporting larger continuous improvement projects (Kaizen, 5S, Lean).
  • Conduct raw material and finished goods inspections at receipt and dispatch points, verifying weights, counts, and condition; update inventory and ERP system entries as required.
  • Maintain orderly, organized workstations and tool boards; perform housekeeping tasks to support GMP compliance and efficient line changeovers.
  • Support and participate in internal and external audits, providing required records, demonstrating processes, and implementing corrective actions as needed.
  • Assist with allergen segregation and control tasks, including labeling, line separation, and cleaning verification to prevent cross-contact and ensure product safety.
  • Communicate effectively with QA, maintenance, production planning, and supervisors to prioritize work, escalate issues, and confirm production changes or hold instructions.
  • Follow packaging, palletizing, and loading instructions to ensure safe and secure shipment of finished goods; assist with stretch-wrap, pallet build, and dock staging as needed.
  • Monitor utilities and process support systems (compressed air, steam, refrigeration lines), reporting anomalies that may impact production or food safety.

Secondary Functions

  • Support continuous improvement and cost-reduction initiatives by documenting process variances, scrap drivers, and waste opportunities for review.
  • Assist QA/Lab with hands-on sample transfers, basic lab prep tasks (weighing, dilutions), and routine data entry into LIMS/ERP systems under direction.
  • Help maintain spare parts inventory and tools; initiate purchase requisitions for critical parts to reduce future downtime.
  • Participate on safety committees or cross-functional teams to review near-misses and implement preventive measures in the plant.
  • Contribute to new product introductions and pilot runs by providing operational input, identifying equipment modifications, and validating procedures.
  • Provide documentation and operator support during customer or third-party audits and certifications (SQF/BRC), including walk-throughs and on-line demonstrations.
  • Assist with seasonal or surge production planning by cross-training on multiple lines and adjusting work assignments to meet demand.
  • Support waste management, recycling, and sustainability programs by segregating materials, tracking disposals, and suggesting reductions in packaging or scrap.
  • Participate in training content development, updating SOPs, and creating operator checklists to capture tribal knowledge and standardize best practices.
  • Perform any other duties as assigned by supervision to support safe, compliant, and efficient food production operations.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Knowledge of food safety systems: HACCP, GMP, allergen control, and experience supporting SQF/BRC/IFS audits.
  • Hands-on experience with processing and packaging equipment: mixers, fillers, slicers, ovens, retorts, fillers, sealers, and conveyors.
  • Routine preventive maintenance and mechanical troubleshooting (bearings, belts, motors, basic PLC fault codes).

  • Competency with Microsoft Office (Excel for basic data entry and tracking) and experience with ERP/MRP systems (SAP, Oracle, Microsoft Dynamics).
  • Understanding of QA testing routines (microbiological, chemical, physical) and ability to follow sampling plans.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:
