Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Conduct comprehensive, independent third-party food safety and quality systems audits against GFSI-benchmarked standards (e.g., SQF, BRCGS, FSSC 22000).
  • Evaluate client facilities, operational processes, and documentation to ensure strict compliance with federal and local regulatory requirements (FDA, USDA).
  • Develop detailed, risk-based audit plans, including scope, objectives, and schedules, and communicate them effectively to client management.
  • Author and submit timely, accurate, and professionally written audit reports that clearly document findings, non-conformities, corrective action requests, and opportunities for improvement.
  • Manage the corrective and preventive action (CAPA) process by reviewing client responses for adequacy and verifying the effective implementation of proposed solutions.
  • Assess the implementation, validation, and verification of Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points (HACCP) plans and Preventive Controls (PCQI) programs.
  • Perform thorough risk assessments of food production processes, from raw material receiving and handling to finished product packaging and distribution.
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of prerequisite programs, including sanitation (SSOPs), pest control, allergen management, environmental monitoring, and supplier approval.
  • Facilitate professional opening and closing meetings with senior client leadership to discuss the audit process, scope, and critical findings.
  • Gather objective evidence to support audit conclusions through direct observation, personnel interviews, and meticulous review of records and procedures.
  • Act as a key technical resource, providing clients with expert interpretation and guidance on food safety standards, regulations, and industry best practices.
  • Assess food defense (TACCP) and food fraud (VACCP) vulnerability assessments and mitigation strategies to ensure product integrity.
  • Investigate and analyze food safety incidents, customer complaints, and recall events to identify root causes and prevent recurrence.
  • Maintain all required auditor credentials, qualifications, and certifications through continuous professional development, training, and calibration activities.
  • Ensure all audit activities are conducted with the highest level of professional ethics, integrity, objectivity, and confidentiality.
  • Evaluate environmental monitoring programs to ensure they are robust and effective in controlling pathogens and spoilage organisms in the processing environment.
  • Review and approve technical documents, validation studies, and food safety plans submitted by clients as part of the certification process.
  • Manage travel logistics, expenses, and schedules efficiently to conduct on-site audits at various client locations, often requiring extensive travel.
  • Witness and assess the competency of new auditors or auditors-in-training to ensure consistent and high-quality audit performance across the organization.
  • Verify product traceability and recall systems through mock exercises to ensure rapid and effective response capabilities.

Secondary Functions

  • Provide on-site coaching and informal training to client personnel on food safety principles and standard requirements to foster a culture of compliance.
  • Participate in internal auditor calibration meetings to ensure consistency, accuracy, and fairness in the application of standards and audit scoring.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • GFSI Scheme Expertise: Certified and experienced in at least one GFSI standard (SQF, BRCGS, FSSC 22000).
  • HACCP Certification: Formal training and demonstrable expertise in developing and auditing HACCP plans.
  • PCQI Certification: Certified as a Preventive Controls Qualified Individual.
  • Regulatory Knowledge: In-depth understanding of food safety regulations, including FDA (FSMA) and/or USDA requirements.
  • Lead Auditor Training: Formal certification in audit principles and techniques (e.g., ISO 19011).
  • Root Cause Analysis: Proficiency in methodologies like 5 Whys, Fishbone Diagrams, and Fault Tree Analysis.
  • Microbiological & Chemical Principles: Strong foundational knowledge of food microbiology and chemistry as they relate to food safety hazards.

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

Experience Requirements

Typical Experience Range:

  • Experience auditing a wide variety of food processing categories (e.g., meat, dairy, produce, baked goods).
  • Prior experience working for a Certification Body.
