Core Responsibilities
Primary Functions
- Develop, implement, and maintain the company's comprehensive Food Safety Plan, including HACCP, HARPC, and all prerequisite programs, ensuring continuous compliance and effectiveness.
- Act as the designated PCQI (Preventive Controls Qualified Individual), leading the food safety team and ensuring all FSMA regulations are met or exceeded.
- Lead and manage all internal, third-party, and regulatory audits (e.g., GFSI schemes like SQF/BRC, FDA, USDA, customer audits), driving corrective actions and ensuring successful outcomes.
- Oversee and direct the facility's sanitation program, verifying the effectiveness of cleaning procedures, managing the master sanitation schedule, and training sanitation personnel.
- Manage the Environmental Monitoring Program (EMP) by establishing swabbing schedules, analyzing microbiological data, and implementing robust corrective actions for any deviations.
- Conduct thorough investigations into customer complaints, quality deviations, and food safety incidents, using root cause analysis to implement effective and sustainable corrective and preventive actions (CAPAs).
- Direct and manage the Integrated Pest Management (IPM) program, collaborating closely with third-party service providers to ensure a pest-free manufacturing environment.
- Develop, schedule, and deliver comprehensive food safety, GMP, and quality training programs for all levels of the organization, from new hire orientation to annual refresher courses.
- Maintain and continuously improve all food safety documentation, records, policies, and procedures, ensuring they are current, controlled, and readily accessible for audits.
- Serve as the primary point of contact and liaison with regulatory agencies (FDA, USDA, State/Local Health Departments) on all matters related to food safety and compliance.
- Manage the Supplier and Ingredient Approval Program, including conducting supplier audits, reviewing specifications, and ensuring all incoming materials meet strict safety and quality standards.
- Lead the food defense and food fraud vulnerability assessment and mitigation programs to protect products from intentional adulteration.
- Monitor, interpret, and communicate emerging food safety regulations, industry trends, and best practices to senior leadership, ensuring proactive adaptation and implementation.
- Champion a proactive and positive food safety culture throughout the organization by promoting awareness, ownership, and accountability at all levels.
- Lead the facility's recall and traceability team, executing mock recalls and traceability exercises to verify the effectiveness and readiness of the recall plan.
- Review and approve new equipment, facility modifications, and process changes from a food safety and sanitary design perspective.
- Analyze food safety KPIs and performance metrics, preparing and presenting regular reports to senior management to highlight trends, successes, and areas for improvement.
- Manage the budget for the food safety department, including expenses for laboratory testing, certifications, consulting services, and supplies.
- Oversee product labeling processes to ensure full compliance with allergen declarations, nutritional information, and other regulatory labeling requirements.
- Validate and verify the effectiveness of critical food safety processes, such as thermal processing, metal detection, and X-ray inspection.
Secondary Functions
- Collaborate with Research & Development and Operations teams on new product launches to ensure food safety and quality are embedded in the design from concept to commercialization.
- Participate in cross-functional continuous improvement projects, leveraging food safety expertise to enhance operational efficiency and product quality.
- Provide technical support and expertise to the Sales and Marketing teams in response to customer inquiries regarding product safety, allergens, and quality attributes.
- Support the Purchasing department in the evaluation and qualification of new suppliers, raw materials, and packaging components.
Required Skills & Competencies
Hard Skills (Technical)
- Certifications: HACCP certification and PCQI (Preventive Controls Qualified Individual) certification are mandatory.
- GFSI Expertise: Deep understanding and practical experience with GFSI-benchmarked schemes such as SQF, BRCGS, or FSSC 22000.
- Regulatory Knowledge: Expert-level knowledge of FDA and/or USDA regulations, particularly FSMA (Food Safety Modernization Act), GMPs, and labeling laws.
- Auditing: Proven experience leading and successfully managing regulatory, third-party, and customer audits.
- Microbiology & EMP: Strong knowledge of food microbiology and experience managing Environmental Monitoring Programs.

Educational Background
Minimum Education:
- Bachelor's Degree from an accredited university.

Experience Requirements
Typical Experience Range:
