Core Responsibilities
Primary Functions
- Conduct comprehensive, risk-based inspections and audits of a diverse range of food premises, including restaurants, manufacturers, retailers, and caterers, to ensure compliance with the Food Safety Act, Food Information Regulations, and associated legislation.
- Systematically investigate complaints from the public and other agencies concerning food quality, hygiene, contamination, labeling, allergens, and potential food poisoning incidents.
- Enforce food safety and standards legislation through a graduated approach, from providing informal advice and written warnings to serving statutory notices (e.g., Hygiene Improvement Notices) and initiating legal proceedings.
- Lead or support the investigation of communicable disease outbreaks, including foodborne illnesses, by working closely with public health bodies, interviewing affected individuals, and undertaking detailed source-tracing.
- Collect and submit food, water, and environmental swab samples for microbiological and chemical analysis, interpret laboratory results, and take appropriate action based on the findings.
- Evaluate, critique, and provide expert advice on the implementation and management of food safety management systems, including HACCP (Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points) plans.
- Prepare detailed and accurate inspection reports, witness statements, and comprehensive prosecution files for legal action, ensuring all evidence is correctly gathered and documented.
- Represent the authority as an expert witness in legal proceedings, including Magistrates' Court, Crown Court, and relevant tribunals, presenting evidence clearly and confidently.
- Assess new food business applications, ensuring premises meet structural and operational requirements prior to registration or approval.
- Maintain a detailed and accurate record of all interventions, casework, and communications using the authority's case management software (e.g., Civica Flare, Tascomi).
- Undertake detailed food standards inspections focusing on composition, authenticity, "free-from" claims, nutritional information, and the legality of additives and flavorings.

Preferred Education:
