Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Conceptualize, prepare, and execute high-quality food styling for a wide range of still photography, video, and motion-capture projects.
  • Collaborate closely with photographers, art directors, and clients to understand the creative brief and deliver on a shared artistic vision.
  • Source and procure all necessary food products, ingredients, and specialized items, ensuring they are of the highest quality and visual appeal.
  • Skillfully cook, plate, and meticulously arrange food to look fresh, appetizing, and desirable under studio lighting and for extended periods.
  • Develop and maintain an organized, extensive, and up-to-date library of props, including serviceware, linens, surfaces, and backgrounds.
  • Translate brand guidelines and marketing objectives into compelling food narratives that resonate with the target audience.
  • Manage all on-set food-related tasks with efficiency and grace, from initial prep to final hero shots, often under tight deadlines.
  • Stay at the forefront of culinary and design trends, continuously bringing fresh, innovative ideas and techniques to the creative team.
  • Create detailed pre-production documents, including comprehensive shopping lists, food prep schedules, and prop selection sheets.
  • Ensure that all styled food is an accurate and authentic representation of the product or recipe, maintaining brand integrity.
  • Adapt styling approaches for various media formats, understanding the unique demands of still life, stop-motion, and live-action video.
  • Proactively troubleshoot and resolve on-set challenges, such as melting ice cream, wilting greens, or changing light, using industry tricks and creative thinking.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and professional kitchen/studio environment, strictly adhering to all food safety and sanitation standards.
  • Act as the subject matter expert on food presentation, providing critical input on composition, color theory, and texture during creative planning.
  • Build and nurture a strong network of relationships with food vendors, specialty suppliers, and freelance culinary assistants.
  • Meticulously track and manage project-specific budgets for all food, prop, and styling-related expenditures.
  • Work alongside the post-production team to provide retouching notes and ensure the final assets accurately reflect the on-set vision.
  • Develop inspirational mood boards and detailed style guides to establish and communicate a clear visual direction for projects.
  • Execute highly technical styling tasks requiring precision and patience, such as creating perfect grill marks, flawless cheese pulls, or effervescent beverage pours.
  • Test and refine recipes for photographic appeal, ensuring they are both beautiful and achievable for the end-user.

Secondary Functions

  • Support the marketing and social teams with ad-hoc content creation and exploratory visual concepting for new campaigns.
  • Contribute to the ongoing development and evolution of the organization's overarching brand food strategy and visual style guide.
  • Collaborate with the recipe development team to provide insights on how to write and structure recipes for optimal visual outcomes.
  • Participate actively in pre-production meetings, creative brainstorms, and project post-mortems to foster continuous improvement.

  • Proven experience in recipe development, testing, and modification for visual appeal.
  • Strong ability to source unique and specific props, surfaces, and ingredients to fit a creative brief.
  • Solid understanding of photo and video production processes, including lighting and camera angles, as they relate to food.
