Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Develop, execute, and communicate seasonal and long-range merchandising strategies that align with the company's financial targets, brand identity, and customer profile.
  • Analyze historical sales data, current market trends, and consumer insights to identify growth opportunities, assortment gaps, and new product concepts for all footwear categories.
  • Curate and build a balanced and compelling product assortment by style, brand, price point, and function that meets the needs of our target demographic and drives sales.
  • Manage the Open-to-Buy (OTB) process for the footwear category, ensuring inventory levels, receipts, and markdowns are optimized to maximize sales, gross margin, and inventory turn.
  • Build and maintain strong, collaborative, and strategic relationships with a diverse portfolio of domestic and international footwear vendors and manufacturing partners.
  • Lead all vendor negotiations for pricing, payment terms, delivery schedules, co-op marketing funds, and return-to-vendor (RTV) agreements to secure the most favorable terms for the business.
  • Conduct regular and in-depth competitive analysis, including store visits and online research, to monitor competitor pricing, product assortments, and promotional strategies.
  • Partner with the planning and allocation teams to develop detailed pre-season financial plans and in-season forecasts by department, class, and style.
  • Travel to national and international trade shows, market appointments, and vendor headquarters to source new products, discover emerging brands, and stay ahead of industry trends.
  • Present seasonal product assortments and business strategies to senior leadership, cross-functional partners, and store teams, effectively communicating the vision and key product stories.
  • Manage the complete product lifecycle from initial selection and purchase order creation through to end-of-life strategies, including markdowns and promotional activities.
  • Collaborate closely with the Product Development and Design teams on private label opportunities, providing market insights to create exclusive, high-margin products.
  • Analyze weekly, monthly, and quarterly sales reports to identify best-sellers and slow-movers, taking swift action to react to business needs by re-ordering or editing the assortment.
  • Create and manage assortment plans and buy sheets, ensuring data accuracy for all product attributes, costs, and retail pricing.
  • Oversee the timely issuance of purchase orders and ensure all system data entry is accurate and up-to-date for seamless downstream execution.

Secondary Functions

  • Partner with the marketing and creative teams to develop seasonal campaigns, promotional calendars, and ensure product stories are effectively communicated across all channels (e-commerce, social media, in-store).
  • Collaborate with the visual merchandising team to influence in-store and online product presentation, ensuring key investments and trends are prominently featured.
  • Provide product knowledge and training materials for store associates and customer service teams to empower them to sell the footwear collection effectively.
  • Support e-commerce merchandising by providing input on category navigation, product filtering, and on-site search optimization to enhance the customer shopping experience.
  • Mentor and develop Assistant and Associate Buyers, delegating tasks and providing guidance to foster their growth within the merchandising organization.
  • Participate in regular business review meetings, presenting performance analysis and strategic recommendations for the footwear category to key stakeholders.
  • Resolve vendor-related issues, including shipping discrepancies, quality control problems, and compliance matters, in a timely and professional manner.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Retail Math & Financial Planning: Mastery of retail mathematics, including calculating gross margin, turn, sell-through, and markdowns. Deep experience with Open-to-Buy (OTB) management.
  • Advanced Excel Proficiency: Expertise in Microsoft Excel, including VLOOKUPs, pivot tables, and complex formula creation for data analysis and reporting.
  • Merchandising Systems: Proficiency with retail enterprise systems such as ERP, Merchandise Planning software (e.g., JDA, Oracle Retail, SAP), and PLM (Product Lifecycle Management) tools.
  • Data Analysis & Reporting: Strong ability to synthesize large datasets, identify key performance indicators (KPIs), and generate actionable insights and reports.
  • Assortment Planning Tools: Experience using digital assortment planning and visualization tools to build and present product collections.
  • Purchase Order Management: Knowledge of the end-to-end purchase order lifecycle and associated systems.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • Bachelor's Degree or equivalent professional experience in a relevant field.
