Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

Interpret and translate complex 2D design sketches, renderings, and technical specifications into fully realized 3D footwear prototypes and samples.
Develop and refine patterns for all footwear components (uppers, linings, insoles, outsoles), making precise adjustments to achieve a perfect fit and desired aesthetic.
Operate a wide range of specialized footwear manufacturing equipment, including industrial sewing machines, skiving machines, clicker presses, and post beds.
Execute all stages of the footwear lasting process, from toe lasting to heel and side lasting, using both manual techniques and automated machinery.
Skillfully prepare and apply adhesives and cements for sole attachment, ensuring strong, durable bonds on various material combinations.
Perform complex stitching operations on footwear uppers, including decorative stitching, reinforcements, and closing, while working with challenging materials like premium leather, delicate textiles, and technical synthetics.
Select, inspect, and cut raw materials such as leather hides, textiles, and synthetic sheets, optimizing for yield while avoiding imperfections.
Assemble all prepared footwear components with high precision, ensuring proper alignment and adherence to construction guidelines for a flawless final product.
Execute various sole construction methods, including but not limited to cement-lasted, stitchdown, Blake stitch, and Goodyear welting techniques.
Manage the finishing department processes, including edge trimming, cleaning, polishing, buffing, and lacing to prepare footwear for final inspection.
Collaborate closely with Footwear Designers and Developers to provide critical feedback on construction feasibility, material performance, and potential production challenges.
Conduct rigorous quality control inspections at multiple stages of the making process to identify and correct defects, ensuring all products meet stringent brand standards.
Build and maintain a comprehensive understanding of footwear anatomy, biomechanics, and fit to contribute to the creation of comfortable and functional products.
Create and update technical packages and construction manuals with detailed notes, photos, and process steps to ensure consistency for future production runs.
Troubleshoot and resolve construction and material issues that arise during the sampling and production phases, proposing innovative and practical solutions.
Stay abreast of new footwear construction techniques, materials, and machinery advancements to contribute to process improvement and innovation.
Construct custom footwear for specific projects, including athlete wear-testing, marketing shoots, or special collaborations, often under tight deadlines.
Document the entire sample-making process, from pattern adjustments to final assembly, to create a repeatable and scalable formula for mass production.

Secondary Functions

Perform routine maintenance and basic troubleshooting on shoemaking machinery to minimize downtime.
Contribute to workshop inventory management, tracking materials and flagging reorder points.
Participate in process improvement initiatives aimed at enhancing construction quality, efficiency, and safety.
Assist in training and mentoring apprentices or new team members on core shoemaking techniques.
