Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Proactively engage with every customer, creating an inclusive and welcoming environment to understand their specific activities, goals, and any history of discomfort or injury.
  • Conduct detailed, one-on-one fit analyses using active listening and insightful questioning to diagnose customer needs accurately.
  • Utilize specialized technology, such as 3D foot scanners and gait analysis treadmills, to gather precise biometric data for highly informed footwear recommendations.
  • Educate customers on the technical features, benefits, and intended use of different footwear brands, models, and cushioning technologies to empower their decision-making.
  • Master and execute a comprehensive fitting process, guiding customers from initial measurement to trying on multiple options to ensure a perfect biomechanical match and superior comfort.
  • Provide personalized solutions and recommend complementary products such as performance socks, custom-moldable insoles, and other accessories that enhance the footwear experience.
  • Consistently achieve and exceed individual sales goals and other key performance indicators (KPIs) while maintaining an unwavering focus on the customer's best interest.
  • Build and nurture lasting customer relationships by providing outstanding, memorable service, following up on purchases, and becoming a go-to resource in the local fitness community.
  • Maintain an expert-level knowledge base by staying current on all new product arrivals, industry trends, and technological advancements in the footwear and athletic industries.
  • Handle all customer concerns, product returns, and exchanges with empathy and professionalism, skillfully turning potential issues into opportunities for strengthening loyalty.
  • Confidently and accurately process customer transactions using the Point of Sale (POS) system, including sales, special orders, returns, and loyalty program sign-ups.
  • Actively promote in-store events, training programs, community fun runs, and clinics to drive store traffic and foster deeper customer engagement.
  • Act as a passionate brand ambassador, embodying the store's core values and its commitment to helping people live healthier, more active lives.
  • Master the art of suggestive selling by identifying related customer needs for products like apparel, GPS watches, hydration systems, and nutrition.
  • Demonstrate initiative by consistently seeking out customers on the sales floor to offer assistance and share product knowledge without being prompted.

Secondary Functions

  • Assist in the efficient receiving, processing, and stocking of new inventory shipments, ensuring all footwear is correctly placed and represented on the sales floor.
  • Maintain impeccable visual merchandising standards within the footwear department, including dynamic displays, up-to-date signage, and overall cleanliness and organization.
  • Participate in regular inventory cycle counts and support the annual physical inventory process to ensure data accuracy and minimize product shrinkage.
  • Contribute to a positive, collaborative, and high-performing team environment by assisting colleagues, sharing knowledge, and communicating effectively with the leadership team.
  • Actively participate in all mandatory staff meetings, vendor clinics, and product knowledge training sessions to continuously build upon your expertise.
  • Help maintain the cleanliness and organization of the stockroom and all other non-sales areas of the store to ensure a safe and efficient working environment.
  • Execute all daily operational procedures, including opening and closing duties, as assigned by the store leadership team.
  • Provide valuable, on-the-ground feedback to the buying and management teams regarding customer requests, product performance, and market trends.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Gait Analysis & Biomechanics: Foundational understanding of foot types, pronation, and the mechanics of walking and running.
  • Specialty Fitting Techniques: Ability to properly measure feet (length, width, arch) and apply fitting knowledge for specific activities.
  • Foot Scanning Technology: Proficiency in operating 3D foot scanners and interpreting the resulting data for customers.
  • Point of Sale (POS) Systems: Experience processing sales, returns, and managing customer information in a retail POS system.
  • Deep Product Knowledge: Ability to learn and retain detailed information about dozens of shoe models, brands, materials, and technologies.
  • Inventory Management: Basic understanding of inventory control processes like stocking, cycle counts, and stockroom organization.

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

Experience Requirements

Typical Experience Range: 1-3 years in a direct customer service or retail sales role.

Preferred: 1+ years of experience in a specialty retail environment (e.g., running store, outdoor gear shop, sporting goods). A personal passion for and participation in activities like running, walking, or hiking is highly valued.
