Core Responsibilities
Primary Functions
- Expertly construct fully functional footwear prototypes and sales samples based on technical drawings, CAD files, and specification packages.
- Operate, maintain, and troubleshoot a wide range of footwear creation machinery, including industrial sewing machines, clicker presses, skivers, sole presses, and finishing equipment.
- Execute all stages of the sample-making process, including 2D pattern cutting, material preparation, upper stitching, lasting, bottom cementing, and finishing.
- Provide critical, hands-on feedback to designers and developers regarding pattern engineering, fit, material performance, and overall manufacturability of new designs.
- Translate 3D digital designs or physical lasts into precise 2D patterns for uppers, linings, and internal components.
- Analyze and deconstruct competitor products to understand construction techniques, material usage, and potential areas for innovation in our own products.
- Manage the inventory of raw materials, components, and tools within the prototype lab, ensuring all necessary supplies are available for upcoming projects.
- Conduct rigorous physical and mechanical tests on raw materials, components, and finished prototypes to ensure they meet brand standards for durability, flexibility, and performance.
- Collaborate closely with the Footwear Development team to revise and refine prototypes through multiple iterations until the design vision is achieved and ready for commercialization.
- Maintain meticulous documentation of the prototyping process, including construction notes, material changes, and process improvements for future reference and tech pack updates.
- Ensure all prototypes and samples meet the highest standards of quality, craftsmanship, and aesthetic execution before being presented to key stakeholders.
- Implement and champion safety protocols within the workshop, ensuring a clean, organized, and safe working environment for the entire product creation team.
- Create and modify shoe lasts by hand or with CAD software to achieve desired fit and silhouette adjustments as directed by the design and development teams.
Secondary Functions
- Support the Footwear Development team in creating and refining technical specification packages for handoff to manufacturing partners.
- Participate in fit and wear-testing sessions, providing technical insights and gathering feedback to drive product improvements.
- Research and evaluate new and innovative materials, construction technologies, and machinery that could enhance product performance and manufacturing efficiency.
- Assist in training and mentoring junior technicians, interns, or other team members on shoemaking techniques and equipment operation.
- Collaborate with the Quality Assurance team to establish and refine quality control benchmarks for mass production based on prototype learnings.
- Prepare and organize sample sets for key internal meetings, trade shows, and sales presentations, ensuring they are presented professionally.
- Develop and maintain a comprehensive library of approved materials, components, and construction standards.
Required Skills & Competencies
Hard Skills (Technical)
- Expert Prototyping & Shoemaking: Mastery of hands-on shoemaking processes, including pattern making, cutting, stitching, lasting, and sole cementing.
- Footwear Machinery Operation: Proficiency in operating industrial equipment like flatbed and post-bed sewing machines, skivers, splitters, and hydraulic presses.
- Pattern Engineering: Ability to create and grade 2D footwear patterns from 3D lasts, both manually and using CAD software (e.g., Rhino, Shoemaster).
- Material Knowledge: Deep understanding of footwear materials, including leathers, textiles, synthetics, foams (EVA, PU), and rubber compounds, and their applications.
