Core Responsibilities
Primary Functions
- Scrutinize and document physical evidence to identify, collect, and preserve potential biological materials such as blood, semen, saliva, and epithelial (touch) cells for subsequent DNA analysis.
- Perform a range of serological and screening tests to presumptively identify biological fluids prior to DNA extraction.
- Execute complex DNA extraction protocols, including differential extractions, on a wide array of evidentiary items, from casework samples to bone and tissue.
- Accurately quantify human and male-specific DNA present in samples using real-time Polymerase Chain Reaction (qPCR) instrumentation to determine the optimal path for downstream analysis.
- Amplify specific Short Tandem Repeat (STR) regions of DNA using advanced PCR-based amplification kits and thermal cyclers.
- Prepare amplified DNA fragments for analysis and operate sophisticated genetic analyzer instrumentation, primarily utilizing Capillary Electrophoresis (CE) to generate DNA profiles.
- Conduct in-depth analysis and interpretation of complex DNA data, including single-source profiles, complex mixtures, and low-template DNA, using specialized software like GeneMapper ID-X.
- Utilize advanced probabilistic genotyping software (e.g., STRmix™, TrueAllele®) to interpret complex DNA mixtures and calculate likelihood ratios for statistical evaluation.
- Compare evidence DNA profiles with profiles from known reference samples (suspects, victims) and search against national and state databases via the Combined DNA Index System (CODIS).
- Author comprehensive, detailed, and impartial technical laboratory reports that clearly document all procedures, results, statistical interpretations, and conclusions for use in the criminal justice system.
- Provide clear, concise, and effective expert witness testimony in depositions, hearings, and court trials regarding laboratory procedures, DNA analysis results, and statistical significance.
- Meticulously maintain and document the chain-of-custody for all handled evidence, extracts, and amplicons to ensure evidentiary integrity.
- Perform and document routine calibration, maintenance, and quality control procedures on all laboratory instrumentation and equipment to ensure operational readiness and accuracy.
- Successfully complete regular internal and external proficiency tests to demonstrate and maintain technical competence and meet accreditation requirements.
- Participate in the internal validation of new laboratory methods, instrumentation, software, and chemistries to enhance laboratory capabilities and efficiency.
- Independently manage a demanding caseload, effectively prioritizing tasks to meet investigatory and judicial deadlines without compromising quality.
- Conduct thorough technical and administrative reviews of casework, reports, and data generated by other analysts to ensure scientific accuracy and adherence to laboratory protocols.
- Serve as a subject matter expert and provide training, mentorship, and technical guidance to junior analysts, technicians, and law enforcement personnel.
- Maintain a deep and current understanding of scientific advancements, emerging technologies, and evolving legal standards in the field of forensic DNA analysis.
- Adhere strictly to all established laboratory safety protocols, quality assurance standards (FBI QAS), and ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation requirements in every aspect of the work.
