Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Develop, implement, and update multi-year forest management and stewardship plans that integrate timber production, wildlife habitat, water quality, recreation, and conservation objectives while meeting organizational goals and regulatory requirements.
  • Conduct comprehensive forest inventory and timber cruising using standardized sampling methods to estimate volume, growth, yield, and stand structure; prepare cruise reports and database entries for harvest planning and reporting.
  • Design, plan, and supervise silvicultural prescriptions and treatments (thinning, clearcut, shelterwood, selection systems) tailored to species composition, site productivity, and owner objectives while documenting expected outcomes and monitoring results.
  • Prepare and administer timber sale contracts: advertise sales, develop sale maps, write contract specifications, estimate volumes and values, conduct pre-sale inspections, evaluate bids, and oversee post-sale compliance and scaling operations.
  • Lead reforestation and regeneration efforts including site preparation, seedling selection and procurement, planting supervision, survival monitoring, and adaptive management to ensure successful stand establishment and species composition goals.
  • Implement and oversee prescribed burning programs and fuel management projects for hazard reduction, ecosystem restoration, and understory management, including burn planning, permitting, safety briefings, ignition, mop-up, and post-burn monitoring.
  • Conduct pest, disease, and invasive species surveys; assess risk and recommend integrated pest management strategies, chemical or biological control, sanitation harvests, or other mitigation measures to protect forest health.
  • Manage and maintain forest road and infrastructure planning to support harvest operations and public access while minimizing erosion, sediment delivery to streams, and ecological impacts; coordinate with engineers for culverts, stream crossings, and road decommissioning.
  • Apply GIS, GPS, LiDAR, remote sensing, and aerial imagery to map stands, plan treatments, track changes, and produce high-quality cartographic outputs for management plans, permits, and stakeholder communications.
  • Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local forestry and environmental regulations (e.g., NEPA, Clean Water Act, Endangered Species Act), prepare permit applications, and coordinate with permitting agencies and environmental consultants.
  • Monitor and mitigate impacts to cultural resources, wetlands, and threatened species by conducting surveys, implementing avoidance measures, and coordinating with archaeologists and regulatory agencies.
  • Prepare technical reports, management recommendations, cost estimates, and grant applications; communicate findings clearly to landowners, agency partners, and stakeholders through written documentation and presentations.
  • Supervise, train, and lead field crews, contractors, and seasonal workers; develop safety plans, conduct field briefings, enforce PPE and chainsaw safety, and maintain crew performance and morale.
  • Coordinate budgeting, procurement, and contract administration for forestry projects including equipment rental, seedling purchases, contractor selection, invoice review, and grant fund management.
  • Design harvest layouts and operational plans prioritizing logistically efficient, economical, and environmentally responsible operations, including skid trail layout, landing placement, and erosion control measures.
  • Perform watershed and riparian area assessments and implement best management practices (BMPs) to protect water quality during and after harvest, including buffer design and sediment control measures.
  • Conduct wildlife habitat assessments and implement enhancement measures (snags, down wood retention, edge management, planting browse species) to meet species-specific conservation objectives and certification standards.
  • Collaborate with private landowners, community groups, and public stakeholders to deliver outreach, educational programs, conservation easements, and incentives that promote sustainable forestry and ecosystem services.
  • Evaluate and apply forest certification standards (e.g., FSC, PEFC) and chain-of-custody documentation to ensure market access, traceability, and best practice compliance in timber products.
  • Lead post-treatment monitoring and adaptive management by collecting growth and regeneration data, analyzing treatment efficacy, and adjusting prescriptions based on measurable outcomes and stakeholder feedback.
  • Respond to emergency events (windthrow, pest outbreaks, wildfire) by assessing damage, developing recovery plans, prioritizing salvage operations, and coordinating with local emergency management and fire agencies.

Secondary Functions

  • Support permit preparation and environmental review documents, including biological assessments, conservation plans, and mitigation banking proposals.
  • Contribute to GIS data management, map production, and the maintenance of forest inventory databases to improve planning accuracy and reporting capabilities.
  • Assist in developing and tracking performance metrics and KPIs related to timber yield, reforestation success, fuel reduction accomplishments, and habitat enhancement.
  • Provide technical input on carbon projects, including inventory protocols, carbon accounting, project verification, and stakeholder reporting for ecosystem service markets.
  • Participate in interdisciplinary teams for landscape-level planning, conservation easements, and collaborative forest restoration projects with NGOs and government agencies.
  • Offer expert testimony or contribute to public hearings and stakeholder meetings on forestry activities, zoning, and conservation initiatives.
  • Mentor junior staff and interns by providing field training, reviewing work products, and supporting professional development opportunities.
  • Maintain and calibrate field equipment (cruising instruments, GPS units, clinometers, calipers, rangefinders, sample plot tools) and ensure data integrity during field collection.
