Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Develop and maintain comprehensive forest inventory databases, ensuring data integrity, accuracy, and accessibility for all stakeholders.
  • Conduct advanced geospatial analysis using ArcGIS or QGIS to support strategic harvest planning, road layout design, and operational logistics.
  • Utilize forest growth and yield modeling software (e.g., FVS, Remsoft, Woodstock) to project timber volumes, assess silvicultural treatment outcomes, and develop long-range management plans.
  • Analyze remote sensing data, including LiDAR, aerial photography, and satellite imagery, to classify stand types, estimate biomass, and monitor forest health and changes over time.
  • Perform statistical analysis of timber cruise data to calculate inventory volumes, product estimates, and associated statistical confidence levels.
  • Create detailed, high-quality maps and data visualizations to communicate complex spatial information and analytical findings to foresters, managers, and executives.
  • Support timberland valuation and economic analysis for potential land acquisitions, sales, and long-term investment strategies.
  • Develop and implement tactical and strategic harvest schedules that align with financial goals, sustainability constraints, and supply chain commitments.
  • Monitor and report on key performance indicators related to forest productivity, harvest depletion, and regeneration success.
  • Prepare comprehensive reports and presentations detailing analytical methods, results, and strategic recommendations for senior leadership.
  • Design and manage field data collection processes and methodologies, including the use of GPS, mobile data collectors, and custom applications.
  • Automate routine data processing and analysis tasks using scripting languages like Python or R to improve efficiency and repeatability.
  • Conduct due diligence on timberland assets by analyzing inventory data, growth potential, and operational constraints.
  • Ensure all planning and analysis activities comply with relevant environmental regulations and support forest management certification standards (e.g., SFI, FSC).
  • Collaborate with field foresters to reconcile planned activities with on-the-ground conditions and provide analytical support for operational decision-making.
  • Analyze the economic feasibility of various silvicultural prescriptions, such as thinning, fertilization, and planting, to maximize return on investment.
  • Calibrate and validate predictive models using field-collected data to ensure their accuracy and applicability to specific forest regions.
