Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Develop and implement comprehensive, long-range forest management plans that align with organizational goals for sustainable yield, ecosystem health, and financial return.
  • Design and administer timber sale contracts, from initial layout and cruising to bid preparation and contract enforcement, ensuring full compliance with all relevant state, federal, and local regulations.
  • Conduct detailed forest inventories and stand examinations, utilizing advanced timber cruising techniques and statistical analysis to accurately determine timber volume, quality, growth, and overall stand condition.
  • Author detailed silvicultural prescriptions for a variety of management objectives, including commercial thinning, regeneration harvests, planting, and vegetation control, to enhance forest productivity and ecological resilience.
  • Engineer and oversee the layout, construction, and maintenance of forest road systems, bridges, and culverts, focusing on optimizing access while minimizing soil erosion and aquatic impact.
  • Utilize advanced GIS software (like ArcGIS Pro) and GPS technology for complex spatial analysis, resource mapping, operational navigation, and the creation of detailed harvest unit maps.
  • Directly supervise and monitor harvesting and road-building contractors in the field to ensure strict adherence to contract specifications, safety protocols, and environmental Best Management Practices (BMPs).
  • Manage all phases of reforestation projects, including site preparation, species selection, seedling procurement, planting crew supervision, and post-planting survival assessments to ensure successful stand regeneration.
  • Perform complex growth and yield modeling using software such as the Forest Vegetation Simulator (FVS) to forecast future stand conditions and inform long-term strategic harvesting schedules.
  • Evaluate and recommend innovative logging systems and harvesting technologies to improve operational efficiency, enhance safety, and reduce environmental footprint.
  • Serve as a primary point of contact and negotiator with private landowners, government agencies (e.g., USFS, DNR), tribal partners, and other external stakeholders on operational matters.
  • Conduct financial and economic analyses of forestry investments, including discounted cash flow analysis and stumpage valuation, to support strategic acquisition and management decisions.
  • Play an active role in the company's forest certification program (e.g., SFI, FSC), managing documentation, coordinating audits, and ensuring all operations maintain compliance.
  • Assess and mitigate risks associated with forest health threats, such as insect infestations, disease outbreaks, and invasive species, by developing and implementing integrated pest management strategies.
  • Lead and enforce a strong safety culture for all field operations, conducting safety audits, incident investigations, and ensuring compliance with OSHA and company policies.

  • Stay current with emerging forestry research, technologies, market trends, and environmental regulations to continuously improve management practices.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • GIS & GPS Proficiency: Advanced skills in geographic information systems (ArcGIS Pro, QGIS) and GPS technology for mapping, data analysis, and field navigation.
  • Forest Inventory & Cruising: Expertise in various timber cruising methods, stand data collection, and statistical analysis.
  • Silvicultural Knowledge: Deep understanding of silvicultural systems, dendrology, and forest ecology to write effective prescriptions.
  • Forest Engineering: Proficiency in forest road design, layout, and construction principles.
  • Growth & Yield Modeling: Experience with forestry software like Forest Vegetation Simulator (FVS) to model forest growth and predict harvest volumes.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • Bachelor's Degree from an SAF-accredited program.

Preferred Education:

  • Master's Degree or a relevant professional certification (e.g., Certified Forester®).

Experience Requirements

Typical Experience Range: 3-7 years of progressive experience in operational forestry or forest engineering.
