Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Directly supervise, coordinate, and schedule the daily activities of forestry crews, including planting, thinning, harvesting, and site preparation teams, to maximize productivity and meet project deadlines.
  • Enforce and champion all company and regulatory safety protocols (e.g., OSHA, SFI standards), conducting daily safety briefings ("tailgate talks") and ensuring the consistent and proper use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
  • Provide hands-on training, coaching, and mentorship to crew members on proper forestry techniques, safe equipment operation, and emergency procedures to foster a skilled and safety-conscious workforce.
  • Meticulously monitor and inspect all work in progress and upon completion to ensure strict adherence to silvicultural prescriptions, contract specifications, and environmental management plans.
  • Manage the complex logistics of crew and equipment transportation to and from various work sites, often navigating remote, undeveloped, and challenging terrain.
  • Conduct pre-operational site assessments to identify potential hazards (e.g., snags, steep slopes, wildlife), access issues, and operational challenges, developing and implementing effective mitigation strategies.
  • Maintain accurate and detailed daily records, including crew time sheets, production reports, work completion logs, environmental compliance checks, and incident reports.
  • Oversee the field-level application of herbicides and pesticides, ensuring full compliance with all state and federal regulations, maintaining precise application records, and safeguarding against off-target drift.
  • Coordinate and oversee the routine maintenance, field repairs, and servicing of all forestry equipment, such as chainsaws, brush saws, vehicles, and heavy machinery, to minimize downtime and ensure safe operation.
  • Effectively manage on-site inventory of essential supplies, tools, fuel, and materials, placing orders as necessary to prevent work interruptions and maintain operational readiness.
  • Serve as the primary on-site point of contact for landowners, contractors, and government agency representatives, professionally communicating project status, and proactively addressing any questions or concerns.
  • Implement, monitor, and document Best Management Practices (BMPs) for water quality, soil conservation, and wildlife habitat protection during all phases of forestry operations.
  • Assist in the operational planning and field layout of harvesting units, reforestation sites, stream management zones, and temporary road locations in collaboration with staff foresters and managers.
  • Actively participate in fire suppression activities, including leading initial attack efforts, operating fire equipment, and coordinating crew actions as a certified crew boss or engine boss.
  • Fairly and effectively resolve interpersonal conflicts within the crew, providing constructive feedback and implementing disciplinary action when necessary, in consultation with HR and management.
  • Expertly navigate to and between work sites using GPS, maps, and compass, and be proficient in laying out treatment unit boundaries with flagging and paint.
  • Evaluate individual and team performance, provide regular, constructive feedback, and contribute to formal performance reviews to support employee development and operational excellence.
  • Communicate operational plans, production targets, and safety alerts clearly and effectively to the crew to ensure full alignment, understanding, and buy-in.
  • Ensure and document compliance with all environmental laws, regulations, and company policies related to forestry operations, including those for endangered species and cultural resources.
  • Respond decisively to and manage emergency situations, such as medical incidents or equipment failures, by following established protocols and providing immediate, calm leadership.

Secondary Functions

  • Assist staff foresters with the collection of critical field data, including timber cruising, regeneration survival surveys, and site productivity assessments.
  • Contribute to the development of operational budgets by providing practical input on labor projections, equipment needs, and supply costs based on field experience.
  • Scout potential project sites to provide on-the-ground intelligence and recommendations to management regarding operational feasibility, access, and resource requirements.
  • Participate in community outreach or educational events on behalf of the company to promote sustainable forestry practices and build positive public relations.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • In-depth, practical knowledge of silvicultural practices including planting techniques, pre-commercial and commercial thinning, pruning, and competition control methods.
  • Proficiency in the safe operation, maintenance, and field repair of forestry equipment, especially chainsaws, brush saws, and ATVs/UTVs.
  • Strong, working understanding of federal and state safety regulations (OSHA) and sustainable forestry certification standards (SFI, FSC).
  • Proven experience with GPS/GIS technology for navigation, field data collection, and boundary mapping.
  • State-issued Pesticide/Herbicide Applicator License or the demonstrated ability to obtain one within 90 days of employment.
  • Basic wildland firefighting certifications (e.g., S-130/S-190) and practical experience on a fire line.
  • Ability to accurately read and interpret topographic maps, aerial photographs, and detailed silvicultural prescriptions.
  • Current First Aid/CPR certification is highly desirable.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • High School Diploma or GED Equivalent.

Preferred Education:

  • Associate’s or Bachelor’s Degree.

Experience Requirements

Typical Experience Range: 3-5 years of progressively responsible experience in hands-on forestry operations.
