Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Conduct comprehensive diagnostics on mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, and electrical systems to accurately identify faults and repair requirements on a variety of forklift makes and models.
  • Perform high-quality routine and preventative maintenance services, including fluid and filter changes, lubrication, and safety inspections, to ensure equipment reliability and longevity.
  • Execute complex repairs in the field, ranging from engine and transmission work to rebuilding hydraulic components and replacing electrical parts.
  • Meticulously read and interpret technical manuals, electrical schematics, and hydraulic diagrams to effectively troubleshoot and complete repairs to manufacturer standards.
  • Operate a company-provided service vehicle in a safe and professional manner, maintaining its cleanliness, organization, and parts inventory.
  • Maintain a precise and well-organized inventory of parts on the service van, ensuring you are equipped for first-call completion on common jobs.
  • Utilize laptop-based diagnostic software to interface with modern forklift control systems for advanced troubleshooting, parameter adjustments, and software updates.
  • Prepare and submit detailed, accurate, and timely digital service reports, work orders, and timesheets for every job.
  • Communicate professionally and effectively with customers, providing clear explanations of diagnoses, required repairs, cost estimates, and equipment status.
  • Respond promptly to emergency service and breakdown calls to get customer equipment back in operation as quickly as possible.
  • Perform thorough operational and safety inspections on equipment to ensure it complies with all OSHA and ANSI regulations.
  • Perform minor welding and fabrication tasks to repair or reinforce damaged components, ensuring a durable and safe solution.
  • Manage and prioritize a daily schedule of service calls to optimize travel routes and ensure all customer commitments are met.
  • Provide customers with recommendations for additional repairs, safety upgrades, or equipment replacement to enhance their operational efficiency.
  • Install and set up new or refurbished material handling equipment at customer sites, ensuring it is fully operational and meets their needs.
  • Proactively identify and report any potential new business opportunities, such as the need for new equipment, batteries, or racking systems.
  • Maintain all company-issued tools and equipment, ensuring they are in safe and proper working condition.
  • Perform major overhauls and rebuilds of engines, transmissions, steer axles, and other major components as required.
  • Conduct maintenance, testing, and repairs on industrial batteries and chargers for our clients' electric forklift fleets.
  • Continuously update technical knowledge by participating in factory-sponsored and in-house training to stay current with new technologies.

Secondary Functions

  • Mentor and provide guidance to apprentice or junior-level technicians in the field.
  • Assist the parts department with identifying correct parts, managing returns, and performing periodic inventory counts.
  • Participate in company-wide safety meetings and contribute to the continuous improvement of our safety protocols and procedures.
  • Accurately complete and submit all necessary documentation for warranty-related repairs in a timely manner.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Strong proficiency in diagnosing and repairing complex mechanical, hydraulic, and electrical systems in an industrial setting.
  • In-depth knowledge of internal combustion engines (LPG, gas, diesel) and AC/DC electric motor theory.
  • Proven ability to read and interpret intricate electrical and hydraulic schematics and technical manuals.
  • Competency in using specialized diagnostic tools, including multimeters, hydraulic pressure gauges, and laptop-based software.
  • Basic welding and metal fabrication skills for minor repairs and modifications.
  • Strong computer literacy for completing digital service reports, managing parts look-up, and using diagnostic programs.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • A valid and clean driver's license is mandatory.

Preferred Education:

  • Associate's Degree or Technical Certificate from a vocational school in Diesel Technology, Automotive Technology, or Heavy Equipment Repair.

Experience Requirements

Typical Experience Range: 2-7 years of hands-on experience as a mechanic or technician.

Preferred:

  • At least 3 years of direct experience as a forklift technician or field service technician working on material handling equipment.
  • Manufacturer-specific training or certifications (e.g., Crown, Toyota, Hyster-Yale, Raymond) are highly desirable.
  • Prior experience managing a service vehicle and field-based parts inventory is a significant plus.
