Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Actively assist the primary Forming Operator in the complete setup, calibration, and operation of forming machinery according to detailed job specifications.
  • Safely and efficiently load raw materials, such as metal sheets, coils, or plastic billets, into the feeding mechanism of the forming press.
  • Carefully monitor machine operations during the production cycle to detect any malfunctions, deviations from standards, or potential safety hazards.
  • Remove finished parts from the machine upon cycle completion, inspecting them for initial quality and placing them in designated containers or racks.
  • Perform basic and repetitive quality control checks on finished components using precision measuring instruments like calipers, micrometers, and gauges to ensure they meet blueprint specifications.
  • Read and interpret production work orders, blueprints, and engineering drawings to understand part requirements, material types, and operational sequences.
  • Maintain a constant and organized supply of raw materials to the workstation to minimize downtime and ensure continuous production flow.
  • Deburr, grind, or finish parts as required, using hand tools and power tools to remove sharp edges and imperfections.
  • Accurately count, stack, and package finished products for shipment or transfer to the next stage of the manufacturing process, ensuring proper labeling.
  • Uphold a high standard of cleanliness and organization in the immediate work area, contributing to a safe and efficient 5S environment.
  • Assist with routine preventative maintenance tasks on the forming equipment, including cleaning, lubricating, and inspecting machine components under the guidance of the operator or maintenance staff.
  • Immediately report any equipment malfunctions, production issues, or quality defects to the lead operator or shift supervisor for prompt resolution.
  • Adhere strictly to all company safety protocols, procedures, and policies, including the proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE) at all times.
  • Collaborate effectively with team members, including operators, material handlers, and quality inspectors, to achieve daily production targets and quality goals.
  • Operate forklifts, pallet jacks, or overhead cranes to move heavy materials and finished goods within the production facility (if certified).
  • Complete all necessary production paperwork and data entry accurately and in a timely manner, documenting part counts, scrap rates, and operational notes.
  • Actively participate in continuous improvement initiatives by providing feedback and suggestions for enhancing safety, quality, and productivity.
  • Learn and develop a comprehensive understanding of different forming techniques, tooling, and material properties to support career advancement.
  • Support tooling changes and machine changeovers, helping to retrieve, clean, and store dies and other equipment as directed by the lead operator.
  • Perform visual inspections of raw materials before processing to identify any surface defects, inconsistencies, or damage that could impact final product quality.
  • Manage and dispose of scrap material in designated bins, contributing to workplace cleanliness and material recycling efforts.
  • Cross-train on other production equipment and in other departments as needed to provide flexible support to the overall manufacturing operation.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Proficiency in using basic measuring tools such as tape measures, calipers, and micrometers.
  • Ability to read and interpret basic blueprints, schematics, and work orders.
  • Foundational mathematical skills, including fractions and decimals, for measurements and calculations.
  • Mechanical aptitude with demonstrated experience using hand and power tools.
  • Knowledge of basic machine operation principles and safety procedures.
  • Ability to stand for long periods and regularly lift up to 50 lbs.
  • Forklift or overhead crane operation certification is a significant plus.

Soft Skills

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent is required.

Preferred Education:

  • Certificate or coursework from a vocational or technical school in manufacturing, machine technology, or a related field.

Relevant Fields of Study:

  • Manufacturing Technology
  • Industrial Maintenance
  • Welding or Fabrication

Experience Requirements

Typical Experience Range:

  • 0-2 years of experience in a manufacturing, production, or general labor role.

Preferred:

  • At least 1 year of direct experience as a machine operator helper or in a role involving metal or plastic fabrication is highly desirable.
