Core Responsibilities
Primary Functions
- Assist senior formulators in the day-to-day development of new product formulas from benchtop concept to pilot-scale production.
- Accurately weigh, measure, and combine raw materials to prepare experimental lab-scale batches according to defined procedures and formulas.
- Conduct comprehensive stability testing, including cycle testing (freeze/thaw) and high-temperature oven studies, to assess product integrity over time.
- Perform and meticulously document standard physical and chemical analyses on all batches, such as pH, viscosity, specific gravity, and appearance.
- Maintain highly detailed and accurate records of all experiments, ingredient modifications, observations, and test results in a laboratory notebook and/or electronic database (ELN).
- Prepare, package, and label product samples for various internal and external needs, including sensory panel evaluations, consumer use tests, and marketing presentations.
- Calibrate, operate, and perform routine maintenance on standard laboratory equipment like mixers, homogenizers, viscometers, and pH meters to ensure accuracy and longevity.
- Uphold and strictly adhere to all laboratory safety protocols, Good Laboratory Practices (GLP), and maintain a clean, organized, and safe workspace at all times.
- Assist in the critical scale-up process by providing support, data, and insights to transition successful lab formulas to pilot and full-scale manufacturing.
- Take ownership of the R&D laboratory's raw material inventory, including logging new materials, organizing stock, monitoring expiration dates, and performing cycle counts.
- Observe all formulation trials, meticulously documenting any adjustments, unexpected results, and key learnings to inform future development iterations.
- Input and manage formula data, raw material specifications, and testing results within the company's Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) or equivalent software system.
- Create color-matched batches of cosmetic or colored formulas to meet aesthetic standards and specifications provided by the product development and marketing teams.
Secondary Functions
- Research new and alternative raw materials, ingredients, and formulation technologies under the direction of senior R&D staff to drive innovation.
- Collaborate with cross-functional partners, including Quality Assurance, Regulatory Affairs, and Process Engineering, to ensure seamless project execution and compliance.
- Assist in authoring and updating Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for new and existing laboratory methods, tests, and equipment.
- Support the troubleshooting of off-spec production batches by preparing lab-scale adjustments and evaluating their effectiveness to resolve manufacturing issues.
- Evaluate competitive products through bench-top analysis and performance testing to provide insights on market trends and establish performance benchmarks.
- Manage the submission of samples to third-party labs for required testing (e.g., microbial, safety, claims substantiation) and diligently track results.
- Take ownership of the laboratory's supply and consumable stock, anticipating needs and initiating purchase orders to ensure uninterrupted workflow.
- Provide on-site technical support and guidance to the manufacturing team during initial production runs (first production batches) of new products.
Required Skills & Competencies
Hard Skills (Technical)
- Laboratory Equipment Proficiency: Hands-on experience with standard lab equipment such as homogenizers, overhead mixers, viscometers, pH meters, and analytical balances.
- Good Laboratory Practices (GLP): Strong understanding of GLP, lab safety procedures, and proper chemical handling.
- Batching & Compounding: Practical experience with wet chemistry, preparing lab-scale batches, and following formulation procedures.
- Scientific Principles: Foundational knowledge of chemistry, including emulsions, surfactant systems, and the function of common raw materials.
- Data Management: Competency in Microsoft Office Suite, particularly Excel for data logging, analysis, and creating charts.
- Formulation Software: Experience with or ability to quickly learn PLM (Product Lifecycle Management) software or other formulation databases.
- Mathematical Acumen: Strong basic math skills, including proficiency with percentages, ratios, and unit conversions for precise formulation calculations.
