Core Responsibilities
Primary Functions
- Interpret and analyze complex blueprints, drawings, and sketches to fully grasp project requirements and technical specifications for structural components.
- Accurately measure, mark, and cut wood, steel, and other framing materials to precise dimensions using a variety of hand and power tools.
- Construct, erect, install, and repair structures and fixtures of wood, plywood, and wallboard, including building wall and floor systems, joists, and rafters.
- Adhere strictly to all OSHA safety protocols, local building codes, and legal standards to ensure a hazard-free working environment and structurally sound construction.
- Precisely install window and door frames, as well as subflooring, sheathing, and other critical structural components according to plans.
- Collaborate effectively with other carpenters, tradespeople (plumbers, electricians), and construction team members to ensure project milestones are met on schedule.
- Examine and inspect framework and other wooden structures for damage, defects, or wear and perform necessary repairs or replacements with precision.
- Shape and cut materials to specified measurements, using hand tools, machines, or power saws, ensuring clean cuts and proper fit.
- Assemble and erect scaffolding, shoring, and other temporary structures required to safely access and complete project tasks.
- Verify the trueness of structures throughout the building process using plumb bobs, laser levels, and framing squares to ensure everything is level and plumb.
- Construct building frameworks, including walls, floors, and doorframes, ensuring they are properly braced and squared.
- Install floor joists, lay sub-flooring, and erect wall and roof systems according to the engineered project plans.
- Properly anchor and brace forms and other structures in place to ensure stability during the construction process, especially during concrete pours.
- Perform layout work according to blueprints or oral instructions, including marking cutting and assembly lines on materials with high accuracy.
- Build and install roof trusses, rafters, and other roof framing components to create the structural skeleton of the roof system.
- Construct and install building stairs, including stringers, treads, and risers, ensuring they meet all safety and building code requirements.
- Communicate project progress, potential issues, and material needs to the site foreman or supervisor on a daily basis.
- Identify and resolve construction issues or discrepancies on-site, adapting plans as necessary to overcome unforeseen challenges in collaboration with the supervisor.
- Operate forklifts, scissor lifts, and other equipment to move materials and access work areas as needed and when certified.
- Maintain a comprehensive understanding of load-bearing principles to ensure all constructed frames can support the anticipated loads.
Secondary Functions
- Provide support and assistance to other trades on-site, such as electricians and plumbers, to facilitate a smooth and integrated workflow.
- Participate in general site cleanup and organization to maintain a safe, efficient, and professional work environment.
- Mentor and train apprentice carpenters and laborers, sharing knowledge of techniques, safety, and best practices to develop the next generation of craftspeople.
- Assist the foreman with material take-offs and estimating material requirements for upcoming project phases to prevent delays.
