Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Safely and efficiently operate a heavy or tractor-trailer truck (e.g., Dry Van, Reefer, Flatbed) to transport and deliver freight over long distances in a timely manner.
  • Conduct thorough pre-trip and post-trip inspections of the truck and trailer, including tires, lights, brakes, fluid levels, and other mechanical systems to ensure vehicle safety.
  • Properly and securely load, block, brace, and tarp cargo to prevent shifting or damage during transit, adhering to all legal and company requirements.
  • Meticulously maintain accurate and up-to-date logs of working hours, vehicle service, and repair status, following all DOT regulations and utilizing Electronic Logging Devices (ELDs).
  • Plan and optimize driving routes to meet delivery schedules, considering traffic, weather conditions, road closures, and legal driving hour limitations.
  • Comply strictly with all Department of Transportation (DOT) and Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) rules, regulations, and standards.
  • Maintain constant communication with dispatchers, providing regular updates on position, progress, and any potential delays or issues encountered on the road.
  • Manage all shipping documentation, including bills of lading, freight bills, and delivery receipts, ensuring all necessary signatures and information are collected.
  • Provide exceptional customer service during pickup and delivery operations, representing the company professionally at all times.
  • Maneuver tractor-trailers into and out of tight loading/unloading positions, including docks, job sites, and distribution centers.
  • Immediately report any vehicle defects, accidents, traffic violations, or property damage to management and relevant authorities as required.
  • Monitor and maintain the cleanliness and overall condition of the assigned vehicle, both interior and exterior.
  • Adhere to all company-specific safety policies, procedures, and training protocols to foster a culture of safety.
  • Perform minor roadside repairs and adjustments to the vehicle as needed to ensure operational readiness.
  • Verify the contents of each shipment against the shipping documents to ensure accuracy and prevent discrepancies.
  • Effectively manage fuel consumption and utilize company-provided fuel cards and networks to optimize operational costs.
  • Navigate diverse and challenging weather conditions, such as snow, ice, rain, and fog, by adjusting driving techniques to maintain safety.
  • Weigh vehicle and cargo at certified weigh stations to ensure compliance with state and federal weight limits.
  • Proactively identify and report potential hazards or risks observed on routes, at customer sites, or within company facilities.
  • Utilize onboard technology, including GPS navigation, ELDs, and communication systems, to enhance efficiency and compliance.
  • Assist with the loading and unloading of freight using equipment like pallet jacks or by hand, as required by the specific job.
  • Maintain a valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL) and any required endorsements (e.g., Hazmat, Tanker, Doubles/Triples), as well as a current DOT medical card.

Administrative & Compliance Duties

  • Submit all necessary paperwork, receipts, and logs in a timely and organized manner for processing and reimbursement.
  • Participate in mandatory safety meetings, training sessions, and performance reviews to stay current with company policies and industry best practices.
  • Collaborate with the maintenance department to schedule routine preventative maintenance and necessary repairs for the assigned vehicle.
  • Provide constructive feedback to management and dispatch on route efficiency, customer site conditions, and potential operational improvements.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Valid Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL)
  • Proficiency in operating Electronic Logging Devices (ELDs)
  • Thorough knowledge of DOT, FMCSA, and HOS (Hours of Service) regulations
  • Ability to perform comprehensive pre-trip, en-route, and post-trip vehicle inspections
  • Skill in safe and effective cargo securement techniques (strapping, chaining, tarping)
  • Experience operating various tractor-trailer combinations (e.g., 53' dry vans, refrigerated units, flatbeds)
  • Basic mechanical aptitude for minor vehicle repairs and troubleshooting
  • Competency in route planning using GPS systems, mobile apps, and traditional road atlases

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

Typical Experience Range:

  • 1-2 years of verifiable commercial driving experience.

Preferred:
